I should have posted this sooner, sorry.

 

I was able to solve the issue by installing the proper NVIDIA driver. However, I have read that other things can cause the problem.

 

You can confirm that the driver is causing the issue by going to your bios and setting it up to run on integrated graphics instead of dedicated graphics. If the problem is indeed the video driver, then your system should stop hanging on shutdown or reboot. All you would need to do is install the appropriate NVIDIA driver and switch back to using dedicated graphics in the bios.
