Ubuntu on Ideapad 720s

Hi everyone.

I'm considering buying the new Ideapad 720s as my new ultrabook for everyday use and I wanted to be sure about Ubuntu's compatibility with this machine. I've read about various issues with SSD and touchpad recognition on other Lenovo models, so that scared me off a bit. Any direct experience from you guys? Thanks

Re: Ubuntu on Ideapad 720s

I 've an lenovo ideapad 720s, update your firmware and setup yout bios configuration, and you will be able to install any linux distribution. Now I'm running Ubuntu 17.10 on the ideapad 720s. Good Luck.

Re: Ubuntu on Ideapad 720s

How did you manage to do that? When I burn Ubuntu to an USB and press install during the start from USB the installer does not recognize the SSD. Could you tell what steps you took?

Re: Ubuntu on Ideapad 720s

Would you mind posting how you accomplished this? I'm having trouble getting the device to even boot off of an Ubuntu 17.10.1 USB install drive. There does not seem to be a "linux only" BIOS update on Lenovo's site for the Ideapad 720S-14IKB. I have seen one for the 710S though. Did you use the Windows 64 BIOS update and then install Ubuntu?

Re: Ubuntu on Ideapad 720s

Thanks to the post
Just go BIOS -> Config -> Sata Controller Mode (or similar) and change it to AHCI option

Re: Ubuntu on Ideapad 720s

I've had success doing this now, but that causes UEFI not to recognize my Windows partition, so it cannot boot. Is there an option for dual booting?

Re: Ubuntu on Ideapad 720s

If you change the SATA mode back to RAID, then you can boot your win10 successfully. Then you could follow this to switch win10 from RAID to AHCI. It works so far so good for me.

Re: Ubuntu on Ideapad 720s

I have this awesome ultrabook already, really good one. Ubuntu 16.04 is my main OS, and works pretty good. Nvidia drivers, SSD, touch.

The only is not working is fingerprint sensor, as I understand this model adapted the different version of sensor (different from their Workstation w550s model, were ubuntu also works well including with fingerprint reader), and there is no drivers for this reader yet Smiley Sad

Re: Ubuntu on Ideapad 720s

I recently tried installing Ubuntu 18.04 on my ideapad 720s-15Ik, but the system would hang every time I tried to shutdown or reboot. Did anyone come across this issue? I can't find much on the web about it.

Re: Ubuntu on Ideapad 720s

Have the same issue. The one and only workaround I found is to reboot/shutdown via terminal with force flag:

sudo shutdown -f
sudo reboot -f
