Re: Ubuntu on the G50-45?
Hello,
I wanted to know if it is OK and possible to install Ubuntu istead of windows 8 on my G50-45.
Will there be the needed drivers?
Will there be errors/issues?
Do I still have the warranty?
Thank you.
I would suggest trying a "live disk" first, from Kbuntu or Ubuntu, or even Linux Mint to see if you have errors when it attempt to locate drivers for your notebook. Alternatively you can also look on Ubuntu hardware list, to see if anything in your notebook fails to show up.
I use OpenSUSE, Linuxx Mint and Kbuntu on various computers and notebooks in my office and shop. I like them for server and critical needs as they rarely have to reboot and will run on a boat anchor of a system.
Good luck!
If your Wireless Card is Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4 (168c:0041), there's still no driver available for linux, so you'd need to find another way to connect to wireless networks.
HI
I recently installed Ubuntu on my Lenovo g50 15 -45 and have this problem of wireless controller there any way to install it?
No one has fixed it, in launchpad people mention a possible workaround (try at your own risk). You can follow up this issue on:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1436940
I have this same laptop, and I was able to successfully install Ubuntu as dual boot along with the pre installed Windows 8.1.
But as many have mentioned, the driver is still not available for the Wifi and it will not work.
But there is a work around. I have bought a WiFi Adaptor Edimax from Amazon for $10.
And it works like a charm.
Ubuntu works fine with that adaptor and you will have your wifi connecting without any issues.
Looks like there is a way to use the Windows drivers you already have in your Windows Installation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wchimaoe9KE shows how-to, only problem and the reason I'm here is to see if there's a way to download the QCA61x4 wireless drivers in a .zip file?
There is a fix for Mint. "https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... mments/118"
It won't work on the kernel Ubuntu uses, but I am told it is fixed in kernel 4.5 due to be reeased soon
I loaded 14.04 no problem. I cannot connect to any 11n networks though, only 11g.
It works pretty well all around, I have it set up with 16gb ram and 2x 1tb ssd in raid 1 (replaced dvd with a hd caddy), and coincidently that got me an hd activity light. It takes some tuning to get the most out of it, i.e. CPU cores at 2ghz when on AC power.
the bios is kind of cheezy, very dumbed down. Would be nice if lenovo had an advanced bios you could flash, can't say I blame them, but still would be nice :) They might have some agreement with MS to not mention linux/ubuntu but it seems to be ok w/me.
I actually kind of stumbled into this machine, old dev machine died and this was the only one at best buy where I could easily swap out the hard disk and didn't cost a fortune. I dunno about warranty, I kept the original hard disk and ram, could swap it back and take it in I suppose.
