Y580 Linux compatibility

When I bought Y580 I dreamed of having installed both Windows and Linux on this fine piece of a laptop. Soon I discovered that Linux can't be installed on this laptop. I contacted the Lenovo Support (Czech Republic - the state where I bought my Y580) and they confirmed that it indeed can't be installed. Now the question is:

Is there a way to install Linux on this laptop?

I've tried installing Ubuntu, Debian and Mint. They've all failed. The motherboard seems to lock when I try to boot them up.

I appreciate any help, thanks.

Simon.

Re: Y580 Linux compatibility

It may be more of Nvidia based chipset causing the issues. I had trouble inthe past with a custom desktop that was INtel and Nidia based adn couldn't put Linux on it.

Re: Y580 Linux compatibility

I know, I run Linux as a VM as well but I don't find it satisfactory, that's why I'm asking about installing in on hard drive

Re: Y580 Linux compatibility

hi Anaesim,

In addition to the post by the users above, The Lenovo Y580 comes with a UEFI BIOS for systems with preloaded Windows 8. If you can't install Ubuntu via UEFI as discussed in this thread, try to:

1. Boot into the BIOS by pressing F2 and set the following settings below

UEFI Boot Mode = Legacy

Secure Boot = Disabled  (if applicable)

CSM = Disabled or Legacy (if applicable)

OS Optimized Default = Disabled or Legacy (if applicable)

2. When finished, press F10 to save and exit BIOS then try to install Ubuntu via Wubi

Note:

You may not be able to boot from your Windows 8 OS until you revert back the changes that you did on Step 1.

Hope this helps.

Re: Y580 Linux compatibility

It took a little sweat and tears, but if you look for enough resources you can get linux installed.

I've tried to compile a list of everything I did to get Ubuntu 13.04 installed:

Google errors and what not Smiley Happy.

Re: Y580 Linux compatibility

What are you guys talking about?

I'm typing this with Ubuntu 12.04 on my Y580. Installing this was a breeze. Here's what I did:-

  1. Downloaded the ISO file from the Ubuntu website,
  2. Used a USB installer (you can google for this) to burn that ISO file into a bootable USB drive
  3. Restarted the computer and pressed F12 to get the boot menu
  4. Selected the USB drive as the priority boot drive
  5. Ubuntu loaded up and I installed it.

Not a glitch, except for the fact that it's nearly impossible to get a gaming mouse to work on Ubuntu. I'm still figuring this out.

Hope you're able to install Ubuntu on your Y580. It's pretty sweet.

Cheers!
