Re: ideapad 710s and Linux

I am also looking for a new laptop and this model does have the best price/spec compared to some other models but Linux is a deal breaker for me. I hope this gets resolved soon and we get an answer either way.

This is really dumb

Please provide some ETA for the BIOS update.

Is it even planned?

I just bought it today and tried to install Linux

This is unacceptable, I need an ETA for the BIOS update

In the meanwhile I'm sending it back to Lenovo

I did some research and found that this user guide suggests that you can install Linux on the ideapad 710s.

Page 22:

When do I need to change the boot mode?
The default boot mode for your computer is UEFI mode. If you need to
install a legacy operating system, such as Windows, Linux or Dos, etc (that
is, any operating system before Windows 8) on your computer, you must
change the boot mode to Legacy Support. The legacy operating system,
such as Windows, Linux or Dos, etc cannot be installed if you don't change
the boot mode.

This is very misleading and could be interpreted as false advertisement.
I just hope Lenovo will fix this issue soon.

Hi Amy,

Thanks. You're our best (and probably only) hope for getting these fixes out.

We can assure you that they are very minimal effort changes (a modding team fixed the BIOS by changing just one value, 30 seconds of work) for your engineers.

We just need you to help drive our request forward with the right people.

I'm curious where we are at in the process? Have the development people responded? Are they aware of the problem now?

Sometimes people in large organizations need a little nudging, so perhaps you could ping them again? If you do, be sure to send them a link to this Yoga 900 thread, so that they are fully aware of the gravity of this issue:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/Yoga-900-13ISK2-BIOS-update-for-setting-RAID-mode-for-missing/td-p/3339206

Right now, nobody can install Linux at all on any of Lenovo's new consumer laptops until the BIOS is fixed. This is a pretty critical issue, and we need your help to install the operating system of our choice on the hardware that we paid for.

We were really hoping for a timeline of days, not months.

We can tell you are really trying hard, and we appreciate your extra effort to bring this to resolution!

Thank you so much,
Charles

Microsoft Signature PC program now requires that you can't run Linux. Lenovo's recent Ultrabooks among affected systems.

Re: ideapad 710s and Linux

Got this laptop today to prepare it for a client. Was amazed by the slim stylish looks and seriously considered replacing my aging Dell Latitude 13" with this and buying one for myself. Until I noticed that Acronis True Image can't find the harddrive. Until I noticed I can't even reinstall Windows 10 without jumping through driver-on-usb-hoops. Until I noticed the Gentoo Linux based System Rescue CD cannot find the harddrive either.

This is a SERIOUS flaw Lenovo. Fix it already. Supporting AHCI is not optional.

I also find it troubling that the latest BIOS on Lenovos Website is 0NCN17WW, while my device came with 0NCN21WW dated 04/29/2016.

They'll release a press release/official statement doing PR damage control in under 24 hours, but they won't release the actual fix.

There was nothing about "No linux support" in the product description.

Will we get refunded?

I already sent emails to two local tech news sites.

One of them already made an article about it.

I see they posted a new BIOS yesterday - 0NCN24WW.  Anyone have a chance to test it to see if it works?
