My 2nd gen moto-Es are coming unglued

2017-12-19, 17:03 PM

I have an xt1505 and an xt1527, they're about the same age.  Both of them are coming unglued.  The cover glass  and LCD are coming unstuck from what's inside.  Anybody got a remedy for this?

Hi ab1jx1

That is definitely not a good sight to see. But may I ask if the phone has been dropped? May I ask what happened?

Looking at the photo, I can say that it is Physical damage. And honestly speaking, we no longer manufacture this phone model, so parts may no longer be available. What I can recommend is to visit any repair center for further assistance.

Well, does any phone not get dropped?  The xt1505 has a shell on it, that's the one I use most by WiFi.  The xt1527 spends most of it's time hanging up in this envelope serving as a modem/hotspot.  I'm retired so I rarely take it anywhere.  And it's the one that started separating first.  I had it on a rare trip a couple hours away from home and Google Maps was serving as the GPS that got us there, telling us what turns to take.   Somebody that was traveling with us thought the case wasn't on right.

They haven't really been subjected to heat either, it's like the adhesive just let go with age.  A few weeks later I noticed the 1505 was also coming apart.  This is unusual?

OK, originally I bought the 1505 to send to somebody outside the US, never did it.  Tried using it myself and because it's GSM only I bought the 1527 ince it's much faster for internet.  I have only one sim in the 1527.  The 1505 I carried most every day using it over WiFi from the 1527.

A few days ago I was bending over to pick up an armload of wood and the 1505 slid out of my shirt pocket, fell  a few feet, landing on edge.   It had a shell on it with the rubber edge.  Now the backlight has aparently lost connection.  The display is blank and I've been running it for several days to run the battery down to reboot it.  I still hear my notifications so it's still running.

What seems to have happened is that this double sided sticky tape holding it together is gradually coming loose.  Here a piece is still stuck in one place on the lower side and 2 on the upper side.  The 1527 is also coming apart this way.

I did find a source of replacement displays at https://www.etradesupply.com/motorola-moto-e-2nd-gen-xt1511-xt1527-lcd-assembly-black.html but I don't think I'm qualified to change it.

I found a NOS xt1527 retail by Googling the UPC 723755006225 that was on the factory box.  It was on eBay so I contacted the seller and said I'd like to be able to return it if it wasn't full retail and he said OK.  So I got it, it tethered OK, got the bootloader unlock code OK, put in TWRP then SuperSU, that one's all fine.  Installed AdAway and figured out that when you tether AdAway filters the feed going out over the tether.  My original xt1527 that this was a spare for is coming seriously unglued, and it takes quite a bit of force to squeeze it back together.

My xt1505 looks like this now.  It's like double-sided foam sticky tape that comes loose.

Well, a year later the XT1505 is no longer working. I now have 3 xt1527s, my original one has both come unglued and the back's all blistered up from overheating. It runs 24/7 in hotspot mode as the house internet connection. But it's running and I have spares. I not gonna pay a lot for a cell phone. Bought #2 NOS and #3 used.
