New Moto E3. How do I restore settings, data etc from Old Moto G

2019-04-22, 18:01 PM

Hi All

So I have this shiny 'new' Moto E3

And an old tatty Moto G2

I can back up the G2 to a google drive no problem but how do I restore data etc to the E3?

There is no option during setup to restore from google drive (possible because the app is out of date as I find oonce the phone is running)

The option to restore from a neaby phone appears to restore nothing

So what do I do?

I really dont want to lose emails, SMS, whatsapp etc

WhatsApp is independant of phones.Go WhatsApp>Settings>Chats and sync to make a fresh cloud backup.

SMS are not as easy. There are apps in the Playstore or if you have a Gmail account put this into a search engine,

how to copy your sms messages using gmail

****************************************************************

If you have a google account then go Settings>Accounts and choose Google or whatever account you use and un-tick and re-tick the sync options and that will make a fresh up-to-date backup of you emails/calendar etc.

If you have a PC and a USB data cable you can copy whatever you need off the phone to the PC and then copy it onto the New phone.

If you need the Motorola USB drivers for windows go here,

https://support.motorola.com/us/en/drivers

When either phone is deteted you will need to drag down the Notifiaction bar on the phone and choose this option,

Or you can insert an SD card into the old phone and copy stuff to that then use an SD card to USB adaptor. You can get these lots of places including eBay and Amazon.

HTH :)

Please re-read my post.

You need to back up your sms using Gmail if you have it or use an app.

Your emails do not need backing up as they are independent of you phone and are held on your Email account.Mine's Gmail.

WhatsApp you sync in the app.

Contacts are held off the phone if you have a Google/gmail account.

Thanks for that. The only item that seems to be a problem is contacts.
I have backed up the old phone to my google drive but I cant get the new phone to restore from it. Losing contacts will be a pain.

But if I create a gmail account I can sync old phone to gmail and then gmail to new phone?

There's an,"Old School" way of transferring contacts.

On the old phone go Contacts>settings<Import-Export and export the contacts as a .vcf file.If you have an SD card stick it in the old phone first and choose it as the location. Then put that in the new phone.

The file will look like either 00001.vcf or contacts.vcf.This is a portable copy of te contacts.I keep a copy on my Laptop and also send a copy to myself attached to an email. Then I can download it to any of my phones anywhere in the world and just use the phone's Contacts Import/Export option to import it.

You can sometimes end up with duplicate entries in the list once imported into the contacts app.Just highlight each set of duplicate entries and choose the Merge option form the 3 dots.
