No SD Card After Formatting as Internal

2016-09-23, 15:37 PM

After formatting my SD card as internal storage, it is no longer regonized, nor is my internal storage expanded.

Some apps downloaded after formatting have also dissapeared.

I only have my orginal 8 GB of intrernal storage now.

Try ejecting and re-inserting. If still unrecognized, see if it works in card reader in a pc. If not, you may need a new card.

If an SD card is formatted under Marshmallow as adopted/internal storage rather than portable, will a PC even recognize it? I've read conflicting information on various sites about that.

It may be that the first card I used in my phone did suffer an actual physical/electronic failure, but when my phone stopped recognizing it, I removed it and inserted it into the card readers on multiple PCs, but none of them recognized it.

I've also read an article or two that claim Marshmallow should treat an adopted/internal SD card no differently than the phone's "real internal" memory, but I can tell that some apps will still install only to the "real internal" memory and not the SD card.

If a card is formatted internal it can NOT be removed from the phone and used in another PC or phone without formatting it. When M formats it as adopted it formats the card as EXT4 (I think) and also encrypts it. So putting the card in a PC will not work for 2 reasons - no encryption key on PC, and most PCs can't read an EXT4 partition. Linux can, but I am assuming windows for this discussion.

There are ways to use diskpart (command line utility) and possibly disk administrator to see that there is an unreadable card and format it back to FAT32. Any card that is formatted internal/adopted can be reformatted as FAT32 (or something else) via PC if you have the right tools.

If you plug the phone into a pc, then the card is mounted via the phone, and the PC will see one "internal storage" on the phone, and can access some of the card.

M treats the card as an extension of internal storage. But as you see, some apps can't be moved there. So it is not exactly  the same. Also SD cards are not as fast as the built in storage and never will be.

Re: No SD Card After Formatting as Internal

I card reader on a pc would sound the notification that something was plugged in, but that was all.

So I tried doing a low level format with a digital camera, it would get ~ 30% thru then fail.

I did get a new SD card today and it is recognized. It just seemed very coicidental that my card would die after the formatting.

M still shows it as and SD card even though I formatted as internal.

Can your phone reformat the card?

Re: No SD Card After Formatting as Internal

For clarity...when I removed the first SD card from my phone that was no longer recognized by the phone, the LEDs on the card readers connected to PCs didn't even light up as if something was inserted. I didn't expect to be able to see folders or read files, nothing like that. All I thought was that if the card was not physically/electronically damaged, it would show up somehow--but it never did--so I tossed it out and started all over with a new card.

Yes, it can reformat the new card as portable or internal. The old card it could not.

On my 3rd SD card, this is really annoying, I guess formatting as internal is not ironed out yet.
