How to retrieve/import an address book (Moto G 3rd gen.)

2016-08-17, 10:17 AM

Hi all.

How do I import the address book on my Moto G 3rd generation when my previous mobile (an old Samsung SII) has been stolen?

Actually I have saved my previous Samsung address book on my PC (thanks to the Kies-Samsung software) also in .csv format.

Any hint?

Thanks in advance,

Carlo

The easiest thing to do is import into Google contacts on a PC - fix anything that is wrong, then sync your contacts to your phone by making sure your google account is set to sync contacts.

You might be able to do this with the Google account on your phone.  The Contacts app on the phone can only import a .vcf file, but if you sign into the account on a computer, I think you can import the .csv there, which will then sync to your phone.

Thanks. Will try.

I wonder if a .vcf file is for one single contact or if it can include a whole address book.

BTW, during the initial setup of this Moto G I was asked to retrieve details from my account... I agreed and all my contacts were retrieved (I believe thanks to google sync) BUT without phone numbers. Only their email address was included (and I do not use gmail as my default email program)...

Update.

I tried to import the address book file as a single .csv file in my gmail account on the pc. All contacts were imported but they look blank, that is, the label where you expect to see the contact name (on the left of the gmail address book) is empty ALTHOUGH the relevant info (phone number) shows in the detail window on the right.

See attached images.

Then I tried to import the contacts as .vcf files, but in this case each contact is a separate vcf file and I am not allowed to select all files during the import procedure, so I'll have to import individually all the 230 vcf files... :(  How can I override this issue?

Google is very picky on the csv fields.

What worked for me:

  1. create a couple contacts in google on pc
  2. export them as csv
  3. open google csv, and old csv
  4. copy contents of old csv into proper google csv
  5. reimport

I've just tried. It didn't work because the filed names in old and 'google' csv's are different. I'll have to find out the way to create a google-compliant csv file

There are two ways to do this:

1.  Copy the info field by field into the Google .csv.  Example: if Google calls the first name field "firstname" but the old .csv calls that field "first", copy everything in "first" into "firstname".  Just make sure as you copy and paste that all of the data winds up aligned.

2.  The second method is to save the old .csv with a new name so you're working with a copy (you do this to preserve the original data in case something goes wrong).  Next, change the field names in the copy to match the field names in the Google .csv.  Using the example above, you would leave the data in the copy of the old .csv alone, but you would change the field name "first" to match Google's field name of "firstname".  Do that for every field where the field names don't match.  Eliminate any fields that don't have a match in Google by moving the info to other fields that do have a match.  Example: if the old .csv has a field for the contact's shirt size but Google doesn't, move that data into the Notes field, out other appropriate field.

It's not hard to do either way, but it is a little tedious.  Still better than entering each contact all over again.

Thanks crystallet. Trouble is that the csv file created from my current (and very small for the moment) google address book on the pc is odd: it has all the field names in one single cell (A1 position), so actually I don't have separate fields (or columns) that I can edit. Similarly, each row (that is, each contact) has its content in one single cell (A2, A3, A4 and so forth), hence again I cannot edit the content of single fields.
I will have to experiment more.

I would try creating multiple contacts in google - make up some random names numbers and email 1@email1.com, 2@email2.com etc..... then export as csv again.

Googles CSV has lots of fields, but only a few are populated. I have always had nice columns.
