Apps requesting too many permissions?

2014-01-31, 2:34 AM

Just to be clear, I am new to smartphones and my first one is this Moto X...

So I start to ask folks for good app recommendations and start to check them out. However I am quite freaked out by how many permissions I have to agree to, to get a free app!?

Heck, either a yellow pages or flashlight app was asking for permission to access my GPS, my photos!!, my phone settings... they all ask too much and you either accept all or none and get no app...?

If I pay for apps can I get them without giving total access to all my phone files?

Please advise a better way...

Some permissions are a result of lazy coding while other permissions are probably more nefarious sounding than they really are.  For example, why would a music player need to know phone state?  It's so that it can stop playback if it detects you're on a call.  Anyway, most network related permissions are probably due to serving up ads in free apps, though I can't explain why paid apps don't have those permissions removed.

Anyway, the best thing you can do is to keep doing what you're doing.  Basically, keep weeding through apps until you find ones that are acceptable to you.  Good app developers will typically have FAQs on their websites detailing the reasons for permissions.

BTW, if you're still looking for a flashlight app, try the one from Motorola https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motorola.dlight

I agree with what Karter8 said. Checking reviews and asking for recommendations is the best way to go.

If you want a flashlight app with the least number of permissions then I would recommend TeslaLED Flashlight. It has the bare minimum permissions, but yet still be completely functional. I really like this app. Hope this helps.

If you're concerned, you could always install an app like Avast that scans installed apps.  I'm assuming it checks them against a known list of devilish apps.

Droidlight is a nice flashlight app but shuts off when your screen times out (15, 30, 45 seconds, etc...).  I find this so frustrating and haven't been able to find a way to keep the light on after the screen turns off.

I just tested this with the TelaLED app and the light stays on even after the screen times out. I set my timeout to 15 seconds turned on the light and waited. It stayed on even after the screen blanked. Hope this helps.

That app doesn't seem to be available for the Moto X... or at least not appearing in my Google Play search.  Can Motorola fix this issue with their app?

I just downloaded it...I think there's a letter missing in the app name above.  It's TeslaLED Flashlight.
