How do I recover Dialer after upgrade to KitKat?

2013-11-20, 0:23 AM

I have just upgraded my Moto X to KitKat.  When I touch the dialer icon, I see the initial page with Favorites but this is quickly followed by "Unfortunately, Dialer has stopped" as the function closes. I am only able to make telephone calls from "Hangouts".  Any ideas how to recover the dialer function?

From what I'm hearing so far just drag and remove the icon and then long press the phone icon in the app drawer. Then place it back on the dock.

I'd suggest going into Settings -> Apps -> Dialer -> Clear data/cache. It's kind of a last resort option, but if something is crashing the dialer app, that may fix it.

Dragging the icon of the Phone back onto the screen made no difference.

Having emptied the cache of the Dialer, I successfully opened the Phone to only get the same message: "Unfortunately, Dialer has stopped". What is the difference between the Dialer and the Phone?

This is happening to me too. I just upgraded my Moto X on Verizon. The dialer worked fine the first couple times I used it. But then it just stopped working and I kept getting this message every time I tried to launch it, "Unfortunately, Dialer has stopped".

I've restarted the phone, cleared the cache, and deleted a few apps hoping that might be it. Other then doing a factory reset, I'm not sure what else to do. Kind of sucks to have a phone that you can't make any phone calls from without some work arounds.

I just found out what my problem was. I had the app "YouMail" installed on my phone. It's a visual voice mail app. I uninstalled it and restarted the phone. It works fine now. So if you have something like that, it may not be updated to 4.4 yet. I hope this helps.

 +1 on  "YouMail"

Didn't notice it was broken until I needed to make a call....  (I Know, Fine Time right?)

anyway,  found this thread, and sure enough, after uninstalling YouMail, I'm Golden!

<If you have YouMail>  I'm betting when you uninstall it, you'll be all set too... yes

Thank you, Charles. YouMail removed and all my issues with the phone/dialer removed with it.

It is always recommended that when doing a major SW upgrade like 4.2 to 4.4, you closely watch those types of "hook" apps.

In 4.4, "Dialer" was replaced with "Phone" and there are a number of other differences. I expect quite a few apps will have issues until in the app store they specifically say they support Kit Kat.

I experienced similar issues with video playback apps.

YouMail Issues.

This email is to confirm the phone dialer crash conversation we had moments ago.

Can you please clear your phone's cache, delete the app, and reinstall YouMail from Google Play.

To clear your phone's cache:
Applications > Manage Apps > YouMail > Clear Cache + Force Stop

Also, check your connection security settings in the YouMail app:
Menu > Preferences > YouMail Account > Advanced" and change the value of "Connection Security" to "Always".

Then check your push notifications settings:
Menu > Preferences > Message Settings > Push Updated =

Now, refresh the app (Menu > Check Now). I would suggest that you try connecting to Wi-Fi, as well.
