"SIM network unlock PIN"

2014-09-20, 20:42 PM

Hi,

I have a first gen Moto X, that I bought directly from Moto Maker, on AT&Ts network (Model XT1058). I recently travelled abroad and tried to put a different SIM card on my phone. Since then, the phone displays "SIM network unlock PIN" and cannot register with the cellular network.

I have since returned to the US and put back my AT&T SIM card but the problem persists. AT&T gave me a different SIM card and that didn't help. Moto tech support asked me to do a Factory Reset but that didn't help either.

Any clues what I should do?

thanks!

Andreas

I'm not familiar with this issue, so I'm just throwing some thoughts out there...

  1. Were you able to successfully utilize the foreign SIM when you traveled abroad?  If so, was there a SIM lock PIN associated with that that SIM card?

  2. Did you ever request a SIM unlock code from AT&T?

  3. Have you visually inspected the SIM slot for any debris or damage?

Thanks for the quick response!

Answering your questions:

1. I was not able to use the foreign SIM card. I got the same message as the one that I get now

2. I did not request a SIM unlock code fom AT&T before traveling, but I tried today requesting one through https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and I got a message "We do not have a record of the IMEI you entered. Please verify the IMEI entered is correct by dialing *#06# on your device."

3. SIM slot seems OK

thanks again

Sticking to a single thread, I got the PUK from the suggested link and I tried entering it in the the "SIM network..." prompt. It didn't work

thanks,

I have to ask, has the device been modified in any way (currently or at any time in the past)?

Also, did you try more than 5x to unlock the SIM slot while you were overseas?  If so, the SIM will be permanently locked to AT&T as per this page.

Last, have you tried a SIM from Tmobile in your phone just to see if it works?

Device was not modified, other than doing a factory reset as Moto tech support instructed me to do (didn't help).

I got a new SIM from AT&T after returning to the US and haven't tried more than five times. Also the pages says that the device would be permanently locked to AT&T and I am actually trying to connect to AT&T's network but even that doesn't work :-)

Unfortunately, I don't have a nano SIM from TMo :-(

thanks for the help

This is very odd.  I'm out of ideas....I will have to ask around.

Did you try random codes when you had this other sim? If you try to many incorrect codes it will SIM block the phone. I am not sure if that would prevent ATT sim from working, but it would permanently prevent a SIM unlock from working unless some higher level code was available.

Is your phone still under warranty?

@AlphaDog, yes I did try some random codes with the other sim. Phone should still be under warranty (bought Dec 2013)
