do we have a safe way to clean out the mic?

2013-11-24, 23:47 PM

so my mic is filling up with gunk and its time to clean it out. i am about to take a toothpic to it but i am scared that all i will do is press the gunk further into the mic.

also... how much protection is there? as in is there a rubber cover over the actual mic like there is on the gs2 and iphones? if there is then i know i have some playing around room before i actually pierce the mic. i reckon im about to head over to ifixit and see if they show anything.

any thoughts? anyone already go through this successfully? there was a post on this a month ago. but i cant seem to find it.

I will only use compressed air but I will give it short quick blasts from
outside. Of course there is always a danger with anything.

compressed air scares me. i ruined a week old iphone 4s blowing out a slew of sand. i guess thats where the short quick blasts comes in lol. crazy enough though, it was a blessing in disguise. i bought my first android after that.

found the tread i was talking about. its not on here. its from a guy that had to rma his phone because he used air.

As silly as this might sound, I've been using my vacuum cleaner for cleaning out the mic hole in my HTC phone (soon to be replaced by my Moto X coming tomorrow. I just use the brush attachment and go over the hole. Suction is the best way. It's a lot better than blowing air inside it or using a toothpick to dig out dust bunnies or levi lint.. Haven't had anyone tell me, "what'd ya say?"

i just did the toothpick thing. i immediately bottomed out and scrapped something. oops. mic still works, covered the other two up and did the ok gn thing softly and it worked. but ill not try that again. im gonna go hunt around amazon for one of them little as seen on tv mini upholstery vacs with a brush attachment. sounds like a plan. not so much suction that it hurts the mic just as compressed air would. but enough to get the gunk out.

@needa : you're on the right track with a mini-vac. I should go there but my vacuum is a tad old and it doesn't suck like it use to..lol

Be careful with a vacuum and electronics. You can get a static charge from a regular vacuum cleaner. It has to do something with the air movement through the hose. I would hate to see someone post that their phone was fried while vacuuming it.

I just suck it out with my mouth. Sounds silly saying that but it's such a small amount of dust. Works for me.
