Verizon - No Qi charging is my reason not to buy

2013-08-28, 16:07 PM

It's a shame, I was rather excited for this phone.  But the lack of wireless charging is what did it in.  If only the X was like the Maxx and not Ultra.  The larger battery would have made it a better sell, but with out these two things I can't justify paying full price.  Maybe the next Nexus will come to Verizon. :(

The battery life is quite good - while not the MAXX, it is better than the RAZR HD and I believe the Ultra from what I've read.

I was curious as to why there is no wireless charging in the X, but the curved back, and after seeing the teardown, I get it.

My Lumia 928 had wireless charging, and although I used it, on more than one occaision it would move a few millimeters and stop charging and I'd wake up with a mostly dead phone. I have a nice small desk dock for the moto X and it's fantastic.

Now, to be completely honest I don't get why the Ultra doesn't have it if the Mini and MAXX do, as they are all flat-back devices that can sit evenly and fully on a charging pad.

Bit of an enigma.  Though everything Moto has done with these phones/launch has been a bit off.

I loved having my nexus use the palm pre chargers.  I unsuccessfully switch to Qi charging though.  It works for my wife's S3 since I just bought the backplate.  It's great.  Two chargers in the house and a charger in each car.  The new LG charging pads work with a fitted car mount.  I really miss having it and wouldn't pay the price they want for the X without it.

Looking at the iFixIt teardown - I think it's concievable for a third party to make a replacement back for the X with Qi induction coils. It would void the warranty of course but it seems a simple swap out.

Hmm... don't see any pins for charging.  Might be difficult as a replacement cover without soldering.  Functionality is more important then warranties though. ;)

The battery life is about exactly the same as the Ultra, both of which are trumped by the DROID MAXX.

As for the wireless charging, the thickness it adds to the phone would have changed the way it felt in the hand, and because of that I am glad it doesn't have it. The feel of the Moto X in the hand is about as close to perfect as I have felt on any phone to date. I've had the same issue with wireless charging, the phone would not be placed in the sweet spot and would constantly disconnect or I would wake up to a phone that was nearly dead and have to be plugged in anyway. The power dock is just as easy to use and you know it's going to charge your phone.

If I remember correctly the depth difference between the Ultra and Maxx is
1mm. That's with a 50+% battery increase and wireless charging. I would
like the option for an X+ version.
No want for a dock. Did that for the droid x. My wife has an s3 with
wireless charging. I don't need to double my charging device in my house
and car because moto decided to release a flagship device that was supposed
to fight specs with features but left out features.

You're right, it's not a drastic change but it makes a huge difference when you hold them both. I'm not saying wireless charging is a bad idea, just that it would change the aesthetics of the device considerably to make it work.

Not sure about that from what I've heard about the ultra and maxx. Neither
have the X's aesthetics but from what I've heard the difference in feel
between the two is minimal. But they both feel bad.
They should have offered the x in three flavors like the new droids.

I think that would have defeated the simplicity of the X . So far my battery life has been excellent and in fact I found a few really good reasons I prefer not using wireless charging. I can still use it while charging cool

It's much nicer than when I had my Lumia and Qi charger.
