Atrix HD reception in fringe areas

2012-08-05, 19:33 PM

I only live 1 1/2 miles from an AT&T tower and the reception I get with my Iphone is horrible, dropped calls and the signal is 1 to 2 bars.  I would like to hear from someone that is using an Atrix HD phone that is at least 1 1/2 miles from a tower and find what kind of reception you are getting before I spend $450.00 to purchase this phone and find that I am know better than with the Iphone.

I live just over 2 miles from the closest tower and since I have had the Atrix HD I don't recall having a single dropped call, and my signal has been really good. With my iPhone 4 I think I never had more than 3 bars the entire time I owned it.

Really you can't go wrong with a Motorola device when it comes to signal strength, you can ask anyone who has ever owned one.

Re: Atrix HD reception in fringe areas

1985Eagle,

I live in a "fringe area" 40 miles from a city in a gorge through the mountains with very low population; there's about 40,000 people scattered over a distance about 80 miles long and 10 miles wide and I've had a wide range of cell phones over the years from Palm, Siemans, Blackberry, Nokia and Motorola and I have a lot of visitors from all around with phones from Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and god knows who else and I notice a very distinct drop-off in reception with one phenomenon when sitting at my desk.  Let me paint the picture.

View One.jpg attached is the view from my desk and out in the distance at what proves to be 6+ miles are 2 cell towers which is View Two.jpg.

I can sit at my desk with 5 bars reception any time with any of the phones listed above including my own Atrix 2, my wife's Atrix, my wife's or my own old Backflips or even older Razrs.  The instant the sun moves around  and I get annoyed with it blasting me in the face I reach down next to my desk and stick this patio screen shown in View Grill.jpg in the window and my reception instantly falls down to 2 bars.  The grill is plastic coated steel mesh.  I can then step two steps to my right and stand at the door the grill was bought for and I'm back up to 5 bars instantly.

My point of all of this is simply that so many variables affect your reception at any moment, anywhere that you really need to scan and understand your environment.  Simple things affect you dramatically and may not be related to your device at all.  If you have a history of less than stellar reception at the same location with an Iphone I suggest you look very carefully at the environment and your reception as you move around at home.  There easily could be something as simple as a metal grill like mine or maybe, depending on where you live, your house might have steel wall studs which will give you the same effect as my grill.

Just suggestions based on the comment that makes me think you've got a history of poor reception at the location.

Servbotx,

What's your impression of the HD so far?  I was going to buy a couple of them Friday but the people in the store wouldn't do any better than $350.00 each so I decided to wait for a better opportunity.  Only problem with my "2" is that I dropped it on a stone floor in January and shattered the glass so it looks funky but the glass is still smooth and other than the look of it it works fine.

$350? Are you trying to buy them off-contract or for 1 year-renewal? $350 is the 1-year price.

I paid retail for mine, and I am quite happy with it so far. I did a full comparison with both the Atrix HD and the GSM version of the DROID RAZR but had to delete it since the way this forum handles multiple images if funky. I am working on a way to redo it and just post single images on a bunch of posts.

The ATRIX 2 and the RAZR are very similar other than a 200mhz increase in clock speed..

I'll post a link to the thread when I am done so you can check it out.

Cool!  Thanks!  The image thing I agree on.  It just dawns on me though that if you could build the comparison in something like Word and then save as a PDF it could be one post.  I use the two that way all of the time but didn't think about it for this situation today.
