@Mark_Emeritus @Agent_Rich  Please reply, is this thread still being watched?  Another user asked a few months ago because there are no visible signs of activity, and it had already been several months at that point...it would be reassuring for many to hear customers are still being taken care of.

Re:Bootloader Unlock Problems?

2020-07-16, 17:21 PM

I don't think they are. I posted on here last week and still haven't had a response. The only thing I can say is that I contacted support and they assured me that the forums are the only place to get help with an unlock that isn't working or development using their devices in general. They literally told me that they can't help unlock devices bought from Motorola which seems wrong but I had to take that for what it was.

Now, on a whim, I tried unlocking mine again this morning and it worked. From what I've read, there are issues with the unlock tool itself on their website and it doesn't appear to work correctly in all browsers. I had tried Chrome and Safari on my mac and IE on my windows machine and that didn't work. Today, I tried in vivaldi on my mac and I've seen other users say that using FireFox worked for them as well.

In case it helps, here's the steps I followed using their tool. I used the latest version of the Vivaldi web browser as well which might matter based on the complaints I've read from other users.

  1. Make sure your device is one of the unlockable models, you can verify that in the pinned comment on the forum we're posting on. It's at the top of page one. If yours is on the list and isn't a carrier locked model (CID 0x0001, CID 0x0002, etc) then proceed to step 2. If your CID is listed as one of the ones that won't work then there isn't much you can do. Also, they told me that there's no support for carrier locked devices having their bootloaders unlocked so there's no sense going further if the device is carrier locked.
  2. Create an account with Motorola and visit the page to get an unlock key: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
  3. On that page, review the risks and proceed if you're OK with voiding the warranty
  4. On the page to request an unlock key, they indicate that you need to get your OEM code from fastboot. When you do that, about mid way down the page to request the unlock code, there is a link to the data scrub tool. Don't try to open that tool in another tab, instead just click it and you'll get a popup.
  5. paste the entire unlock code into the scrub tool as indicated on the request unlock page and click the button to get a single string for the unlock
  6. Paste the single string from the data scrub tool into the text box on the request unlock page and hit the button to verify it's eligible for unlock
  7. If it works, you should see a new button at the bottom of the page where the radio buttons to indicate you know the risks is
  8. Click that button and your unlock code should be emailed to you

This is my first Motorola smartphone and so far compared to other vendors the unlock process seems to be very opaque and doesn't seem to work correctly. The only thing I did differently this time is that on step 4 above, I had opened another window and copy/pasted the link vs. just clicking the link on the page. I'm not sure if that mattered at all but it worked this time so I can't really say if that was it.

Others seem to be saying they're getting the same experience. It won't work several times and then randomly it does.

Hopefully some of this is useful to you, I know dealing with support won't get you much further than them telling you to go to the boards.

Re:Bootloader Unlock Problems?

My device is the one exception to the 'no carrier unlocks' rule; it's an XT1096

I got the same line from support.  Several times on the online chat, then from a Level 1 agent on the phone, then Level 2.  I was told they get their marching orders from the developers, and it seems that the orders are, there is to be no support here.  Quite disappointed in Motorola/Lenovo here...

Re:Bootloader Unlock Problems?

2020-07-17, 14:21 PM

Hi,

I have a Moto G6 : XT1925-6 Hardware Version PVT2

According to your website it is unlockable.

However, when I provide the oem get unlock data, it says that the device is not eligible.

Can you assist?  I prefer not posting all the data directly on the public forum.

Instead, can I email the info from

fastboot getvar all

and

fastboot oem get  unlock  data

Thanks.

Unlockable bootloader on Motorola devices

PLEASE REVIEW THE RISK ASSOCIATED WITH UNLOCKING YOUR BOOTLOADER BEFORE PROCEEDING.

IMPORTANT:

VERIZON WIRELESS, ATT WIRELESS, AND REPUBLIC WIRELESS DEVICES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THE UNLOCKABLE BOOTLOADER PROGRAM.

If you intend to unlock your bootloader on a Verizon Wireless device, you need a Developer Edition (Moto X 1st Gen or DROID MAXX). If on AT&T you need a 1st Gen Moto X Developer Edition or a Moto X 2nd Gen Pure Edition or  Google Play Edition device (Moto G - GSM only) device.

This restriction also extends to AIO Wireless (AT&T) and Tracfone devices.

EXCEPTIONS:

Amazon Prime subsidized (G4 & G5) devices can NOT be unlocked

Verizon 2014 Moto X XT1096 can be unlocked

List of unlockable phones is here https://support.motorola.com/us/en/solution/MS87215

FAQ:

  • I have a Verizon Wireless Moto G, can my bootloader be unlocked using Motorola’s tool?  No.

  • I have a 1st Generation Verizon Wireless Moto X, can my bootloader be unlocked using Motorola’s tool? No, unless your device is a Developer Edition Moto X; marked as “Developer Edition”. These devices are only available from Motorola or select 3rd party retailers.

  • I have a Droid Ultra, can my bootloader be unlocked using Motorola’s tool ? No, unless your device is a Developer Edition DROID MAXX; marked as “Developer Edition.” These devices are only available from Motorola. This answer is also applicable for Droid RAZR HD, RAZR M, Atrix HD and any Motorola devices sold by Verizon or ATT.

  • Where can I get a detailed list of supported devices ? A complete list is here.

  • How can do i validate whether my device is unlockable? You can use our online tool, or you can check manually by issuing a fastboot command and looking at the CID value returned. Please have the Android SDK installed and the Motorola drivers installed before issuing a fastboot command.

 $ fastboot getvar all

     ….

     (bootloader) cid: 0x0002

     ……

The table below will indicate whether your device is eligible for the bootloader unlock program:

Your device is unlockable if the CID

value returned is:

Your device is NOT eligible for bootloader unlock

if the CID value returned is one of these:

0x0000

0x0003

0x0007

0x0009

0x000B

0x000C

0x000D

0x000E

0x0014

0x0015
0x00DE

0x0032

0x0001

0x0002

0x0004

0x0005

0x0006

0x0008

0x000A

0x000F

0x0010

0x0011

as well as any other not listed on the left

example:

$ fastboot getvar all

... cid: 0x0001

You device is not unlockable. You have an ATT device. These devices are not eligible for the bootloader unlock program.

$ fastboot getvar all

... cid: 0x0002

Your device is not unlockable. You have a VZW device. These devices are not eligible for the bootloader unlock program.

$ fastboot getvar all

... cid: 0x0007

Your device is unlockable. You should be able to get a unlock code through our tool.

if my device is not eligible, can you still help me unlock it?

No.

Ok, so my device should be eligible, but when in enter my unlock string in your tool, I get an error message. What’s wrong?

Please make sure the string you enter in the tool is:

  • formatted to fit on one line only

  • has no spaces (you have to remove them manually)

  • has no carriage returns (these pesky )

  • is of the right length, e.g don’t forget to append the extra 000000… on the last line
  • USE THE SCRUB TOOL on the UNLOCK PAGE - ABOVE the INPUT BOX

As an example, this is what is returned with the fastboot command

$ fastboot oem get_unlock_data

(bootloader) 0A40040192024205#4C4D3556313230

(bootloader) 99999999999999993332323239#BD00

(bootloader) 8A672BA4746C2CE02328A2AC0C39F95

(bootloader) 1A3E5#1F53280002000000000000000

(bootloader) 0000000

And this is what you should enter in the form; it’s a single line, no spaces but with all the trailing zeroes.

0A40040192024205#4C4D355631323030373731363031303332323239#BD008A672BA4746C2CE02328A2A 0C39F951A3E5#1F532800020000000000000000000000

Ok, I entered my unlock string, requested an unlock key, but it’s not in my email. What do I do?

The unlock key should be sent to you within an hour.  Subject is "Unlocking Your Device". Please check your SPAM folder, or if you are a GMAIL user, please check the UPDATES folder as the new Gmail sorting rules place additional communications from Motorola in your update folder.

What browser should I use?

We recommend Google Chrome. Make sure Pop-up/Ad Blockers are turned off and you aren't in Incognito mode.

Ok, nothing’s working !!!! Help me!

Let us know on this thread, and we will try to help. Please make sure you check the steps above first. If you believe you still have an issue, please make sure to include in your post :

  • The data returned by $ fastboot oem get_unlock_data (don't remove the "(bootloader)" from the results. There is a helpful tool now to make your unlock data here. <--- SCRUB TOOL on UNLOCK PAGE

  • The data returned by $ fastboot getvar all

  • If possible, please provide these strings as text (cut/paste) rather than screenshots of your desktop. It will make it a lot easier for us to help you as we need to cut-and-paste this data as well.

Can I send you PM to get help?

No, we don't respond to PM's unless we PM you first.

How long will it take you to get back to me?

We try to respond within 48 business hours. Excluding weekends and holidays.

How do I unsubscribe from this thread once I get my solution?

At the top of this thread there is an option to unsubscribe.

Thanks!

I have a Motorola G7 power that I have tried several times to unlock through the Motorola unlocking page with no success.

The page says the device is ineligible for unlocking but is should be unlockable with a CID 0x0015

Any help would be greatly appreciate.    Thanks.
