NEW - THIS TITLE POST IS MANY YEARS OLD and has been edited to remove references to some phones no longer supported - UPDATED LIST OF UNLOCKABLE PHONES in link right below (If your phone is not listed, there is no support for unlocking it)

https://support.motorola.com/us/en/solution/MS87215

PLEASE REVIEW THIS INFORMATION BEFORE POSTING!

Unlockable bootloader on Motorola devices

PLEASE REVIEW THE RISK ASSOCIATED WITH UNLOCKING YOUR BOOTLOADER BEFORE PROCEEDING.

IMPORTANT:

VERIZON WIRELESS, ATT WIRELESS, AND REPUBLIC WIRELESS DEVICES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THE UNLOCKABLE BOOTLOADER PROGRAM.

If you intend to unlock your bootloader on a Verizon Wireless device, you need a Developer Edition (Moto X 1st Gen or DROID MAXX). If on AT&T you need a 1st Gen Moto X Developer Edition or a Moto X 2nd Gen Pure Edition or  Google Play Edition device (Moto G - GSM only) device.

This restriction also extends to AIO Wireless (AT&T) and Tracfone devices.

EXCEPTIONS:

Amazon Prime subsidized (G4 & G5) devices can NOT be unlocked

Verizon 2014 Moto X XT1096 can be unlocked

List of unlockable phones is here https://support.motorola.com/us/en/solution/MS87215

FAQ:

    • I have a Verizon Wireless Moto G, can my bootloader be unlocked using Motorola’s tool?  No.

    • I have a 1st Generation Verizon Wireless Moto X, can my bootloader be unlocked using Motorola’s tool? No, unless your device is a Developer Edition Moto X; marked as “Developer Edition”. These devices are only available from Motorola or select 3rd party retailers.

    • I have a Droid Ultra, can my bootloader be unlocked using Motorola’s tool ? No, unless your device is a Developer Edition DROID MAXX; marked as “Developer Edition.” These devices are only available from Motorola. This answer is also applicable for Droid RAZR HD, RAZR M, Atrix HD and any Motorola devices sold by Verizon or ATT.

    • Where can I get a detailed list of supported devices ? A complete list is here.

    • How can do i validate whether my device is unlockable? You can use our online tool, or you can check manually by issuing a fastboot command and looking at the CID value returned. Please have the Android SDK installed and the Motorola drivers installed before issuing a fastboot command.

 $ fastboot getvar all

     ….

     (bootloader) cid: 0x0002

     ……

The table below will indicate whether your device is eligible for the bootloader unlock program:

Your device is unlockable if the CID

value returned is:

Your device is NOT eligible for bootloader unlock

if the CID value returned is one of these:

0x0000

0x0003

0x0007

0x0009

0x000B

0x000C

0x000D

0x000E

0x0014

0x0015
0x00DE

0x0032

0x0001

0x0002

0x0004

0x0005

0x0006

0x0008

0x000A

0x000F

0x0010

0x0011

as well as any other not listed on the left

example:

$ fastboot getvar all

... cid: 0x0001

You device is not unlockable. You have an ATT device. These devices are not eligible for the bootloader unlock program.

$ fastboot getvar all

... cid: 0x0002

Your device is not unlockable. You have a VZW device. These devices are not eligible for the bootloader unlock program.

$ fastboot getvar all

... cid: 0x0007

Your device is unlockable. You should be able to get a unlock code through our tool.

if my device is not eligible, can you still help me unlock it?

No.

Ok, so my device should be eligible, but when in enter my unlock string in your tool, I get an error message. What’s wrong?

Please make sure the string you enter in the tool is:

    • formatted to fit on one line only

    • has no spaces (you have to remove them manually)

    • has no carriage returns (these pesky \n)

    • is of the right length, e.g don’t forget to append the extra 000000… on the last line
    • USE THE SCRUB TOOL on the UNLOCK PAGE - ABOVE the INPUT BOX

As an example, this is what is returned with the fastboot command

$ fastboot oem get_unlock_data

(bootloader) 0A40040192024205#4C4D3556313230

(bootloader) 99999999999999993332323239#BD00

(bootloader) 8A672BA4746C2CE02328A2AC0C39F95

(bootloader) 1A3E5#1F53280002000000000000000

(bootloader) 0000000

And this is what you should enter in the form; it’s a single line, no spaces but with all the trailing zeroes.

0A40040192024205#4C4D355631323030373731363031303332323239#BD008A672BA4746C2CE02328A2A 0C39F951A3E5#1F532800020000000000000000000000

Ok, I entered my unlock string, requested an unlock key, but it’s not in my email. What do I do?

The unlock key should be sent to you within an hour.  Subject is "Unlocking Your Device". Please check your SPAM folder, or if you are a GMAIL user, please check the UPDATES folder as the new Gmail sorting rules place additional communications from Motorola in your update folder.

What browser should I use?

We recommend Google Chrome. Make sure Pop-up/Ad Blockers are turned off and you aren't in Incognito mode.

Ok, nothing’s working !!!! Help me!

Let us know on this thread, and we will try to help. Please make sure you check the steps above first. If you believe you still have an issue, please make sure to include in your post :

    • The data returned by $ fastboot oem get_unlock_data (don't remove the "(bootloader)" from the results. There is a helpful tool now to make your unlock data here. <--- SCRUB TOOL on UNLOCK PAGE

    • The data returned by $ fastboot getvar all

    • If possible, please provide these strings as text (cut/paste) rather than screenshots of your desktop. It will make it a lot easier for us to help you as we need to cut-and-paste this data as well.

Can I send you PM to get help?

No, we don't respond to PM's unless we PM you first.

How long will it take you to get back to me?

We try to respond within 48 business hours. Excluding weekends and holidays.

How do I unsubscribe from this thread once I get my solution?

At the top of this thread there is an option to unsubscribe.

Thanks!

Re: Bootloader Unlock Problems?

Hi,

I am trying to unlock the bootloader of my Moto X 2014 (xt1093) on US Cellular. I just received Lollipop (5.0.2) and decided to unlock the bootloader. I received the unlock code but when I tried to unlock I got this...

fastboot oem unlock xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

(fastboot) check "enable oem unlock" in developer options

(fastboot) oem unlock failed

Ok, so I went back into my developer options and tried to check enable oem unlock but there was no check box!!

I looked everywhere but there was no box to be found! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks again!
