Camera2 API Questions - new user

2019-12-21, 17:19 PM

Just ordered Moto Z3 Play XT1929-4 on a very good holiday deal, for delivery in January.  After making do for some years with an Android L phone limited to Camera1 API with help from some very good third-party camera apps,  I'm particularly looking forward to Camera2 API functionality:

- manual controls

- native RAW/DNG output, and possibly

- trying out the XDA Google Camera ports

Some searching indicates the stock Moto camera app (apparently got an upgrade late 2018?) has some manual controls and "fun" settings, but does not produce native DNGs.  I've found APKs for three XDA ports for GCam but not any discussion of whether they're any good.  Would very much appreciate experience, suggestions or useful links on these Camera2 API topics.

Hi I2k4,

Google camera is only supported on Pixel devices. We do not support this app on our phones. We highly appreciate your feedback. I'll pass this along, but we can't guarantee any changes. Any links to download/sideload the Google camera app will be removed.

Moving to developers community

Best regards,

Camera2 API Questions - new user

2020-02-23, 17:06 PM
Iim new to camera tech bc this G7 is the firt decent camera I've had. These moto cameras have more features and faster processing than all but high end devices, imo. That said, I couldn't resist sidelioading a Gcam port, and this hardware pulls it off very well. Slo mo, night sight, hdr, all of it. Gotta love the community around Android! There are several ports, obv, Personally, I dont "chase" links, and I don't download software from journalists. Go to developers,, read, ask questions.. Have Fun!

Re:Camera2 API Questions - new user

Thanks, nice to get a reply.  The phone was badly delayed in shipping after a huge Canadian discount sale, but got delivery last week.  It immediately updated to Android 9.  I ran the Camera2 Probe app and found the Moto Z3 Play has a good Level 3 Camera2 rating, with few limitations.  Someone at another forum tipped me to this GCam v. 6.2 port, the August 2019 version installed and seems to be running perfectly on the device (I was told new GCam 7.x needs Android 10):

The developer buries a nice guide to under-the-hood settings in the "About" section.  I like to shoot with "manual" style apps like Lenovo's stock when there's time and not too much sun glare, but so far GCam is the best quick auto camera app I've used, especially in low or tricky light. My one caution about sideloading APKs like this is to always have a third-party malware scanner installed - BitDefender cleared this GCam no problem.

I'm also getting very good DNGs and manual controls from several of the "DSLR" style apps I've tried.

2020-05-07, 13:47 PM

Just updating to confirm success with the August 2019 (latest) version of BackRider's GCam 6.2 on Moto Z3 Play, and changing the Subject heading to (hopefully) have this thread show up in forum Search results:

More info about this GCam port in earlier post.
