Try a 3rd party launcher app like ADW or Go Launcher EX.  They will change your user experience without modifying your device.

Personally, I love Go Launcher EX :)

Have you looked at your data settings? There is a setting called data saver. If that  is enabled that could cause the update option to be dimmed out. If that does not work, it may be a good idea to just do a factory reset. That way you know you are starting with a fresh, clean phone.

thanks,

You can't get updates/upgrades over the air without that "MOTOBLUR Crap" as you put it. Does seem odd that it is grayed out. I would say you never accepted the Motorola Terms and Conditions. Without doing that you won't connect to our servers to be eligible to download updates/upgrades.

A good place to start is register your phone with Motorola to show ownership: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/registration

What happens if you put in #ELIOT# in the dialer? What happens?

1. Do you have any social networking accounts on your phone? Menu > Accounts > Add Account (Facebook, Twitter, Other Email, Yahoo! Mail, etc) This should prompt you to accept terms

I am am troubled by the fact that you mention it is grayed out in Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Updates. Even if you don't have an account it shouldn't be grayed out. It should then tell you that you don't have an account and that you need to accept the terms and conditions. It may come to you needing to do a factory data reset if #1 doesn't work to establish a connection to our servers.

Does your phone number end in 7430? If so, you have an account but it is showing as inactive currently. You might not be connected to wifi but have your data manager set to sync only over wifi.
