per cincinnati bell: "here is a statement we received from Motorola as of 12/15: Motorola will not be developing for release an Android 2.2 FROYO software upgrade for the North American variant of the Motorola XT720 Milestone"
looks like this will be my last phone from motorola. time to root my phone and be done with it.

Thank you mrmako for confirming our fears.
Motorola: Boo. Until the bootloader is unlocked, expect my "glowing" reviews everywhere.

Was this statement in an email, word of mouth, online?? Where is your proof of this besides what you have written?

its on cincy bells facebook page. have a look if you dont believe me...i will say that im disappointed (although not surprised) that mark or any other forum manager hasnt posted an official statement here. believe me, the horrible customer service experiences ive had with motorola is enough to never buy another phone from them EVER, and thats not counting this disappointment. pissing off customers isnt the way to effectively run a business guys...let this be a wake up call...

Confirmed. It's on the facebook page.

That's awesome. My friend was on the fence between getting the Droid II for himself and getting the Droid X for his girlfriend - instead they just picked up two Nexus S's.
I kept trying to tell him to avoid Motorola, and they just made my case for me through that Facebook post. So glad I got this e-mail too.

It kinda makes you wonder why they even bother putting a 'system update' function in the phone, knowing all well that they never intended on updating it.

The System Update function is for system updates, not upgrades.
Upgrades CAN be used through this feature, though most do not. It's either a tethered-USB installation or an installation from SD card.
I know this doesn't change anything, just clarifying.

It is because that is a function provided by android and actually used in other brand handsets. Motorola was as lazy in removing the menu item as providing updates to their handsets.
For example see:
http://dimitar.me/just-upgraded-my-nexus-one-from-android-2-1-to-android-2-2/
(BTW, he seems to have gotten his update in July 2010!)
So what lesson we learn from this?
