Incorrect Heart Rate Display

2012-08-09, 13:43 PM

For the past couple of weeks, I have had some problems with the HR display. The device will show my HR shifting rapidly from up to 209 BPM down to 0BPM and occasionally to no reading at all. This usually happens at the beginning of a workout and goes to normal after several minutes. I keep my chest strap very clean so I know that it isn't dirt and sweat disrupting transmission. When it first started I assumed that it was a sign of a dying battery but changing it didn't make a difference. This only happens during running and aerobic activities. With weight training and yoga there doesn't seem to be a problem. Anyone know of a fix for this?

Hi Starkman,

Just a little tip here...

Did  you wet the HRM belt with water before wearing it? It needs to have a good contact between you and the belt.

The chest strap and electrodes are indeed wet. I'm an almost 10-year veteran of HR monitors and wetting is kind of a HR Monitors 101 subject. I don't attribute the problem to that. This is a recent problem despite no changes to the conditions of my usage. And it sucks because the HR monitoring was the one thing this device  had going for it that consistently worked properly.

Have you tried with another HRM belt?

I have not. I make a good living, but I don't have the funds to keep multiple HR straps around for trial and error. I reiterate, I do not think that this is a problem with the strap. If that were true the data would be wacked all the time instead of only during running and aerobics workouts.

Do you have another device, maybe a smartphone you could pair your HRM with to eliminate it as a cause?
