Motoactv 2 Coming Soon (I hope)

2013-02-07, 11:52 AM

Motoactv 2? Of course not!  Thanks to Google Motoactv is as dead as the dodo, but if like me you love your Motoactv this looks like it could be  a promising alternative.

I hope it comes to fruition.

I really like the looks of this.  Any idea on a release date?

Here's the thing with the Actv.  Moto didn't want to go out and take a major chance.  They jumped into the market with a product that was similar to what was already out (GPS watch/MP3 Player) and made one new unit.  However, they didn't take advantage of what they had, Android.  Who would have guessed that 2 years later we'd be on the brink of a smartwatch revolution.  The Actv may have been the 1st 'smartwatch' but it was made only for sports.  Moto played it safe, and I can't say I blame them for that.  I love my Actv, and I don't want to get into the short comings and negatives of the actv and it's support.

I'm actually excited about getting a smartwatch, but until I saw this, it wasn't going to replace my actv.  Most smartwatches can track distance, etc... but I don't think they are setup for sports.  This smartwatch gathers the best of sport and smartwatches.  Depending on price, I may replace my Actv with this.

I saw that product at CES 2013 and it's been on my radar ever since.  Don't get me wrong, I like my ACTV and it has all the CPU power and software to rival with this new comer but the lack of support and publicity killed the project in its infancy.  The ACTV will remain for posterity as a huge conceptual step forward, the first true "smart watch" and driving force for others to emulate.  RIP.

Yeah I totally agree.  I've had my Motoactv for about 16 months now, and it's been fantastic.  I've run literally thousands of kms with it including  2 marathons, various halfs and many 10ks.  I've sweated all ovet it and I've ran torrential downpours, and 40 degree heat.  Apart from an early on issue with the headphones it's still like new.  Of course there have been bugs, but it was and remains  way way ahead of it's time there is nothing on the market right now that even comes close to the Motoactv in terms of features and hardware power.  Additiionally being based on Android it is possible to expand the firmware in infinite ways, once it is rooted.  Such a crying shame that Google abandoned the ACTV. The new watch looks comparable, and I'd love to see it become available, but unfortunaly there has been no further news since January so I wonder if it'll ever get off the ground.

Looks pretty cool to me. I love my Moto, but it isn't going to last forever. Google still has a chance to get its head in the game and dominate this market. If they can't do that before my Moto dies, it's nice to know that something like this will be waiting to take its place.

It will be to see if an entrant to the smartwatch market by Apple (do we believe this will happen?) could spur Google to follow suit. Still, seems right now Google is focused on Glass.

I picked up my Moto a few ago when thinking about picking up a Nano, and was shocked I'd never heard of the Motoactv. It's a sweet little machine that operates exactly as I want.
