Photon Q: How to auto-rotate the main screens?

2012-10-24, 16:04 PM

I have auto-rotate checked in the display settings. When I slide out the keyboard or plug into the HD Dock the screen auto-rotates to landscape. This makes sense. However, at all other times the screen is locked in portrait. How do I enable auto rotate of the main/home screen without having to slide the keyboard out?

Yes, even my Moto XPRT will autorotate properly. Annoying to have the screen locked on portrait for the basic screens (apps generally handle it OK) on the PQ. :(

I think that this is working as it should. Apps, and when the KB is out the screen should rotate. But when on a home screen, with the KB in, I would think that it would be locked in portrait mode.

Try unchecking the box for "auto rotate" and try holding the phone in landscape and open an app that normally would rotate.

Thanks,

J

When I uncheck the box then not even apps rotate. That is taking things in the wrong direction. For phones without a keyboard, how do their home screens work? I bet they auto-rotate. Why shouldn't this phone act the same way when the keyboard is slid in?

I understand that is a step in the wrong direction. I just wanted you to see that the check box applied to the apps, not the main home screen.

I would imagine that the thought process behind it was that with the keyboard out you would not want the screen to rotate. You would want to be KB in front, looking at what you are typing. I would not think that you would want the KB out and the phone displayed in portrait mode.

But, if this is what you are looking for, I guess that you can either:

  • wait and see if Moto adds this to any future upgrades/updates.

  • install a third party launcher, such as Nova, or Apex. I think that these launchers will allow auto rotate no matter KB is in or out. There are free version of these launchers out there. I would try them first to make sure it is what you want.

Also, keep in mind that if you do decide to go with a third party launcher, that the Motorola Circle Widgets will not work.

Thanks,

J

I do understand.

I just think that this is how Motorola made it to work. I've had the BackFlip, FlipSide, and MoPhoQ now, and all have either slideout, or flipout KB's. They have all acted the same in regards to portrait and landscape modes.

All I can say is that this is a good place for you to post your thoughts as Motorola folks do review these forums. And as long as we keep the place clean and well organized, I think they will continue to come back.

Thanks,

J

Mine auto rotates fine.  I have it checked to auto rotate in settings--display and also in settings--accessibility (under system).  Works great for me!

Mine is checked there and there's no rotation.  I would like this improved.  When I'm driving, I need the phone to be in landscape mode, since it makes the buttons a little further away from each other.

Is there a way to use Smart Actions to lock it in landscape if certain requirements are met?

A car dock will allow the phone to rotate into landscape mode when driving.
