Audio Issues Xoom Family Edition

2011-10-20, 11:52 AM

I purchased a Xoom Family Edition and absolutely love it.  All the complaints I felt regarding the Xoom have been addressed, such as not requiring another unique charger and screen brightness.  When the tablet gets 3.2 it will also be updated with SD functionality so no complaints and the price was great.

Unfortunately there seems to be a big issue with the audio of the device.  The speakers are very quiet and the mic doesn't seem to work very well either.  When I used Talk or Skype with them (they are using the Xoom being discussed) I hear terrible feedback from their system and can they can barely hear me.  We have trouble shot it with tech support and ruled out everything on my end. It is almost like the mic is stuck in "speaker phone" function and the noise cancelling system can't figure it out.

Unfortunately, I am going to have them FEDEX the tablet back so I can exchange it for them, re install all the apps and widgets, then FEDEX it back.  There is no way my 73 year old parents are going to figure all that out, it was hard enough simply getting them to navigate the system as is.

I am eagerly awaiting news of the Xoom 2 (I am praying for Tegra 3) and the launch of the Razr.  Even though I love my X2, the Razr seems too much to ignore.

i think there is an issue with the mic, not the (weak) speakers.  Anyone else having this problem?

i picked up another Xoom FE and tested the Skype on it.  It had the same issues.  I think there is an issue with the mic or speakers on these.  Skype works perfectly with a headset.

Also, there is a noticeable lag while typing.  Makes it annoying to use.  Maybe it is the website.

For what it is worth, I use an original iPad for work and can't  wait for the new Xoom.  iPads definately have their shortcomings too.

The speakers on the Xoom FE are extremely weak.  I am hoping this is not the actual hardware of the speakers themselves and can be addressed with an update.  The speakers are almost unusable.  The volume seems to also be low when the headphones are plugged in as well.

Equalizer from the market improves the situation about the low volume.

Which equalizer app?  I love my FE but am frustrated by the quality of the speakers!

This app:

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.smartandroidapps.equalizer&hl=en

Equalizer from Smart Android Apps

and boost all the frequencies. It definitely helps.

It's free but there is also the paid version.

Equalizer seems to help with the low music volume, but when I try to play movies the sound is so low, I can't hear it and thus the movie is unwatchable.  Is there either a setting in Equalizer I am missing...(I am using the free version) or is there another App that helps with movie sound?
