Micro SD Card - Xoom Family Edition

2011-10-18, 7:09 AM

I am new so please forgive me if I am asking a question that has been already answered.  I picked up the Xoom Family Edition tonight.  For the life of me I can get the micro SD card reader to work.  I read on the web that there is an upgrade coming.  Is that still the case?  If so, why was it sold as having a working reader?  I returned a Toshiba Thrive because the micro SD card reader was the deal maker for me.  I appreciate any insight.

MZ505 Xoom Family Edition has SD Card support out of the box..no update needed.

Note: You cannot add content to the card directly from the device. Remove the card and load your content, then insert the card and the device can access the content on the card.

The MicroSD card reader works fine in my wife's Xoom FE.  You can also transfer files to the card through a USB connection to a PC, or using a third-party file manager such as Astro.  The path is /mnt/sdcard2.

I found that it is quite difficult to remove the microSD card to use it in a reader to connect it to a PC. The door that covers the card is difficult to open and you need to use tweezers to remove the card.

These steps are the best to take:

1. Download and install Motorola XOOM Family Edition 5.2.0. driver with MotoHelper from the Motorola support page.

2. Connect XOOM to PC with a USB cable. It will show as MZ505 media device on the PC. The internal memory will be accessible, so you may copy files or folders here.

3. Use ASTRO file manager to move files and/or folders from /mnt/sdcard (internal memory) to /mnt/sdcard2 (your microSD card).

Thanks for posting this. I've been trying for an hour to use market apps to move files.

On edit:I can't get the Moto drivers to DL to my PC. Do I need to be able to move files to the card, or will files be sent there automatically when the internal memory is full? I'm too dumb to figure this out.

Please note that you need to install the drivers on your PC and not on the phone. Please do the following:

1. Go to:

http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-EN/Consumer-Support/TABLETS/Motorola-XOOM-Family-Edition.

2. On the right side of the page click the link to "USB & PC Drivers"

3. Click the link "Download Motorola 5.2.0 Driver with MotoHelper*" and save the MotoHelper_2.0.53_Driver_5.2.0.exe file to your PC's Desktop or anywhere on your hard drive.

4. Run this program and reboot your computer before connecting your phone.

As to your second question, the internal memory of the XOOM Falily Edition tablet is quite big, so you do not need to move any files to your microSD card. However, if you plan to load several gigabytes of video files to your XOOM, you may load them to the internal memory and then move them to the microSD card. Please note that some video players (I use the free and excellent Daroon Player) will need to be set to search the "external" sdcard for videos.

I was tired last night and kept DL'ing the charging drivers on the bottom of the page you linked. They won't do much for the FE BTW. Now with the proper drivers I was able to move some music and pics to the SD card, and they show up in the proper places. I like the 3D look of the stock music player. Thanks for the slap on the head to wake me up, norm.

While moving files from PC to sdcard2, the DL will be interuppted after a short time(30 sec or so), and a message will come up on my PC saying the Xoom has been disconnected. This happened every time I was connected, and I was diligent about making good connections and not diturbing them. Never had a problem like this with any other devices. Anyone else notice this?

I noticed something similar in that when I plug the Xoom to a PC to charge, the PC recongnizes it.  However, as soon as the screen blanks out, it disconnects it.  I Think it may have something to do with the "sleep" mode???

I'm new to the forum, just purchased a Xoom FE and have been playing with it for 3 days.  I have no problem seeing the micro SD card (as mentioned, its path is /mnt/sdcard2) and I have been saving files to it using OfficeSuite Pro as well as moving files on and off with Astro.
