Motorola Xoom FE General Information

2011-11-01, 19:34 PM

I thought it would be nice to have one topic regarding all discussions about features and updates. For me it was difficult to find information about this new device so I thought it would be nice for everyone to have a nice overview.

The Xoom Family Edition (Xoom FE) is available since the 16th of October, there have been a lot of questions regarding  the differences between this version and the original Xoom.

Short review by me:  The device is pretty awesome!!!1oneone actually but Motorola could support it a bit better so the hardware awesomess is backed up by some nice firmware as well hehe.

I will update this topic as long as there's enough animo! Please help me with suggestions

Hardware

  • Motorola Xoom mz505
  • Dual Core Tegra 2 Processor (clocked at 1 GHz)
  • 1 GB DDR2 Ram
  • 5 MP Rear Camera (1.3 MP front facing camera)
  • 16 GB internal memory
  • Supports Micro SD cards out of the box (max. 32 GB)
  • 10.1 inch screen (1280 x 800) probably IPS-TFT instead of TN-TFT (unconfirmed)
  • Size differs from the original Xoom, so cases etc. won’t be usable. Best Buy sells a custom case.
  • NO Gorilla Glass (compared to Xoom 1)
  • NO Barometer (compared to Xoom 1)
  • For more specs please see the official Xoom Family Edition page

Software

  • OS: Android 3.1 (Honeycomb)
  • Bootloader: Locked
  • Pre-installed applications (supposed to be worth 40 usd zomg!):
    • Quickoffice
    • Asphalt 6
    • Sim City Deluxe HD
    • Kid Mode
    • Merriam-Webster Dictionary
    • MOTO Pack
    • MOTOPRINT
    • Twonky

As of right now, the bootloader is locked. Other Motorola are confirmed to be updated to ICS and have an unlocked bootloader. Many Xoom FE agree there should be at least an upgrade to ICS or the bootloader should be unlocked.

We are aware this device is marketed as a device for the whole family but I am sure there are lots of families who would like an option to use fastboot and unleash this beast’s real potential muhaha.

To unite our feelings I have made an online petition to show Motorola we would really like an update or unlocked bootloader. This is really not like Motorola so I am sure they will help us out. If an unlocked bootloader or update to ICS is confirmed I will send you guys a pair of wooden shoes (or a Dutch apple pie) from The Netherlands to show my gratitude (I am not kidding, I want this update really bad. PS Wooden shoes are awesome ).

V 0.1 - 11-01-11 I didn't have much time to create this but I really think it was necessary. If you have any suggestions please reply. And don't forget to sign the petition! I will complete this post tomorrow if I find some time!

Interesting concept...

You'll need to update two pieces of information:

Android 3.2 has already been confirmed.

ICS is now also confirmed.

Hi Mark,

This is standard practice on Dutch fora (having a "general" topic), I like my Xoom a lot so I thought it would be nice to have one topic containing some general information you wouldn't find on the Motorola page.

Max,

where are Mark's wooden shoes?

Other difference from normal Xoom is that the microSD is writable directly from the tablet.

And it seems it can read USB flash drive with a microusb host cable, but I didn't try it yet.
