Re: Intermittent Wifi connection problems with my Xoom

2011-03-30, 10:23 AM

otter533, just to make sure I understand correctly: at work Xoom can connect to the router correctly but can not access the web, is that correct?

Another question: when you connect your phone or laptop to your work wifi, first time you try to browse, is there a specific web page that is displayed for you to accept some "Terms & uses" or something like that?

Do you have to setup proxy settings on your laptop or phone?

halfdollazavala, when you restart the Xoom, how long does it work correctly? Does it require couple of disconnection/reconnection to start failing? or does it happen right after the first connection to your router?

That is correct - at work the Xoom can connect to the router and get 5 strong bars of signal, but no web access. Both my iphone and my laptop do not have Terms of Use agreements when I access the web. It is truly a public access wifi.

Have you already try this (see 2nd post in thread below)?

Just tried it, but it didn't help. I should mention this is more than just a browser issue, because I cannot access my mail, or the Android market, or essentially any web access on the Xoom. I walked into another public access area, and I also had the same result.

Re: Intermittent Wifi connection problems with my Xoom

Some routers have intermittent WiFI connectivity issues when connecting to the Motorola XOOM so you may have to assign an IP to the Motorola XOOM by logging into the Netgear router and reserving the IP via the administration panel.

Make sure you're not connected to the WiFI network when you complete the following steps:

- Apps

- Settings

- WiFi

- Press WiFi Network Profile for your router

- Modify network

- Change IP settings to static

- Complete the following fields with the appropriate information:

  • IP Address (reserved IP)
  • Gateway (router's IP address)
  • Network prefix length (usually 24)
  • DNS1 (IP of DNS server)
  • DNS2 (IP of DNS server)

- Save

There is also a new FAQ addressing this issue: 63964 - Motorola XOOM - Netgear Router Intermittent Connection Problem

Hope this helps --

Re: Intermittent Wifi connection problems with my Xoom

Thanks for the info. I tried the steps to the xoom. I do not have access to the router as i am at a hotel. unfortunately this did not affect any change.  Still having same connection poblems.  I cannot get a you tube video to load as an example. It just sits on the loading circle endlessly.

Thank you for the feedback.

Argh! Did someone actually try following the instructions in that FAQ?

A workaround is to reserve an IP for the Motorola Xoom by logging into the Netgear router and reserving the IP through the administration panel.

Tip: In order to proceed with the steps below you cannot be connected to the Wi-Fi network. If you are connected, touch on the network and touch Forget.

Change the Wi-Fi settings on the Motorola Xoom:

  1. Touch Apps
  2. Touch Settings
  3. Touch Wi-Fi. Do a long touch on the profile for the Netgear router
  4. Touch on modify network.
  5. Change IP settings to Static.
  6. The following fields need to be filled in with the appropriate information:

    • IP address (use the IP address that was reserved)
    • Gateway  (put in the router’s IP address)
    • Network prefix length  (This is usually 24 for home networks)
    • DNS1  (IP address of DNS server )
    • DNS2  (IP address of DNS server)

  7. Touch Save

The menu items do not match what I see in the Xoom Settings app. This is your device. Why don't your instructions match the actual menus on the Xoom 3.0.1 device?

Now to add insult to injury, I brought in my rooted Nook color today, and it is able to to connect to the internet sucessfully. I was wondering maybe if the router was looking for authentication or something, but it just feels weird having a $200 reader  hook up to the net, while my $600 tablet is being used as a calculator today.

On thing that generally happens  is that the router will normally give you the same ip address everytime unless it gets uswd by another device. I have not had a minutes trouble with my netgear wndr3700 and I'm running wpa psk.
