Wi-fi keeps disconnecting -

2012-06-22, 16:27 PM

My wi-fi keeps disconnecting and reconnecting constantly. It keeps losing the connection and then cycles back on. It does this every few seconds and won't keep a steady connection. It seems to have started with the update to ICS. If anyone has any ideas as to how to fix this, I would greatly appreciate it.

I experienced this behaviour once shortly after the ICS upgrade.  A forced reboot (press the power and volume up buttons at the same time for about three seconds) solved the issue and it hasn't reoccured.

Have you tried to delete the wifi connection and readd it?

Also, does this happen for all wifi connections?

Re: Wi-fi keeps disconnecting -

I tried deleting the connection and re-entering the password and it didn't correct the issue. I also reset/rebooted the Xoom and it still has the same problem. I may end up doing a Factory data reset if this problem persists because I am constantly going from 4G/3G to wi-fi and back. I don't have unlimited data and when I download large files, it uses both connections. Anyone else experience this?

Wish I could help. Have a Xoom Wi-Fi model and its Wi-Fi is rock solid for me.

As jperrin mentioned, did you try a different connection? (Like a different Wi-Fi hotspot.)

My Bionic, other phones and my computers all work fine on this wi-fi connection. Only the Xoom has issues. The issue happens even when I turn off data. It is weird. It looks like I will have to do a factory data reset. The little wi-fi symbol goes blue then gray then it disappears and comes back on again. This happens over and over.

Factory reset will most likely have little effect on the issue.   The new broadcom firmware in the Xoom is fully 802.11n compliant (not draft) and that unfortunatly makes some settings on Wifi access points that were certified "draft" not compatible with the Xoom.   It doesn't mean that Xoom and your access point aren't compatible hardware, just means that some current settings on the access point may be making Xoom unhappy as they aren't valid per the standard official standard.   Problem is occuring for other ICS devices as well as apple moble products after their latest upgrade.

What access point do you have?

Thank you for the input. I am using a Verizon FiOS Actiontec M424WR - Rev1 Wireless N router. It is the newer version and it works fine on my Bionic. Is there a setting that I need to change on my Xoom or on my router?

I've also had nothing but problems with wifi after ics. My networks will all show as not in range and sometimes I can delete all the networks and power cycle my xoom and re add the networks. Then it will work ok for a while and then I lose all my networks again. What I'm afraid of is that I will forget to check that wifi is on and run some data hog like netflix and end up with a big data overage bill. If I'm at home and all of my other wifi devices are working then I just assume the xoom is on wifi also. My phone runs ICS and I've never had these issues with it.

Haven't had time to look at specifics of your router, I downloaded the pdf manual last night but haven't had time ot look at it.

Things to check:

Should be configured to run WPA2/AES   or WPA/AES if WPA2 isn't available.   Running TKIP will nerf bandwidth as technicaly its not secure and the official N standard will only allow 2Mbs of throughput using TKIP.

Check the DHCP lease time for leases being put out by your router.   Try setting it for something like 2 weeks.   Some routers when set to very high lease times will deliver a zero as the lease length.    Some routers falsing assume 0 means infinite, but android sees it as a 0 length lease which will cause it to just cycle over and over again when trying to attach to the AP.

Also if you router supports a B/G/N mode and you aren't running any B or G devices, configure your router for N only.   A single device (neighbors, car driving down the street etc) that pings your router when its in B/G/N compatibility mode will force router down to B mode.   So if you have all N devices best to disable the B/G compatibility.
