Mirage Camera: How can I export 3D photos in 3D SBS format?

2018-06-12, 11:55 AM

What is this 3D image format of the Lenovo Mirage camera? Adobe XMP?
I can only view these 3D images with a Google cardboard on my smartphone in 3D. On my PC they are only in 2D. How can I convert these images to another 3D format so that I can view them on my PC? for example 3D side-by-side

The camera uses the Google Cardboard VR camera format that stores the image for the right eye in the XMP metadata for the JPG. The format is documented here:

https://developers.google.com/vr/reference/cardboard-camera-vr-photo-format

Google has released a tool that will convert videos here:

https://www.blog.google/products/google-vr/introducing-vr180-creator-simple-video-editing/

But it doesn't work for still photos. Until they fix this, you can use a web app to split the images:

https://cctoolkit.vectorcult.com/

You can then append the two images in SBS format.

I really hope Google and Lenovo hit the gas on fully supporting VR180, or else this format is going to be dead in the water.

I have since sent my camera back. :smileysad:

For the price too many defects. Photo quality 9 megapixels in 2018, really? My two-year-old Samsung gear 360 creates 30 megapixels. Video & Audio not in sync with very bad audio quality. I am now waiting for the YI Horizon.

Yeah, I was holding out for the Yi Horizon, but they have not released pricing details and the darn thing keeps getting delayed apparently (but, again, no firm release date).

My kids are only 4 years old once...

The Mirage Camera is very clearly an early adopter's device by a company that doesn't make cameras usually. I knew what I was getting into.

In particular, I wanted to be **bleep** sure I understood the image format so that I could immediately convert it to something more standard (e.g., equirectangular SBS or anaglyph for posterity). I love this stuff, but I have very little faith that this camera or format will still be around next year.

Hey great, thanks. Works perfect.

Unfortunately, I no longer have the camera, because of video audio sync problem.

Apparently the new version of the official google VR180 tool can now also handle photos but I haven't personally tried it yet since it still only supports mac and linux and going through a virtual machine is too much of hassle.

Does anyone have a copy of VR180 Creator for windows or Mac? Every time I try to download it from googles website I get a permission denied error.
