Mirage Camera: lens repair options (scrached lenses)

2018-05-29, 12:37 PM

I carried my camera in my jacket pocket and now the lenses are lightly scratched. Images have a hazy area in the middle.

What are my options for getting this fixed?

Hi Scratchy,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The nature of the VR lens and camera are sensitive and are advise to keep in the lint free pouch for proper care. If you are to call in technical support, they would be able to assess your options and then you can decide.

Setting expectations, scratches are cosmetic by nature but since it may interfere with your usage they may be able to offer sending it to the repair facilities. The repair engineers get to decide if the issue is within warranty coverage (hardware issue vs. external caused) which can go to a billable repair. They would then inform you about the repair cost if not covered by warranty.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Did you manage to repair it?

How bad is it?

Hi! I have the same issue. Did you find out how to get support on it? I carried it in the pouch it came with, but I also have a hazy cloud over all of my images now. When I look up the repair options there is no one listed within a 100 miles for me. (I'm in Wyoming.). Being able to open a ticket somewhere for support would be super handy. Here's a sample of the haze over my images. I'm hoping it's not a scratch, but I can't figure out what else it might be? My hazy VR180 photo  I think I might get a more protective case to carry it in from now on.

Same thing happened to me: After having dropped the camera my images has a small hazy spot (similar to what others has described). I think these lenses are much more sensitive to scratches because they are so wide... I would recommend other users who might read this, to not keep the camera in a loose pocket. The camera can easily fall out of the included bag.

Since the scratch is only on one of the lenses, I am able to export a "spotless" (2D) image by extracting the right-eye image from the vr.jpg-file.

Additionally, I´ve found that the hazy area is not as visible when viewing in VR-headset. This is probably a result of the optical blend between left and right image.

For a really critical picture, I think it should be possible to remove the spot in Photoshop by using information from the non-scratched image pair.

For my case,I called support, sent them a sample image and it's being sent in. I won't know the status for awhile but was pleased with the technical assistance. I would advise others having the issues to follow Spideys info above

These problems are totally predictable, and are common to most cameras that use these types of lenses (e.g., 360 cameras). I ruined a Richo Theta once in a similar manner. I'm really surprised that the cameras aren't designed to allow easier servicing of the exterior lenses (e.g., they could screw on to the body like daylight filters on DSLR lenses).

I guess we're all early adopters...

I wish I had thought about how sensitive these lenses are :-/

The Garmin VIRB 360-camera has a user-replacable front lens and the box includes two extra lenses.
