Sound is muffled and buzzy

2020-06-06, 10:22 AM

The loudspeaker on my Moto E5 has very low volume and sounds muffled and buzzy. When I put good lighting on the speaker, I noticed some gack (crud) coming out of the speaker hole, and, although it had hardened, the crud seemed to have flowed downward from the opening about 2 mm. I also noticed a trace of gack (crud) coming out of the back cover onto the screen at the top of the phone just above the speaker. The gack cleaned off with water. There may be some crud remaining on the speaker grill, but the grill is mostly visible. I'm almost certain that the crud is not food accidentally deposited on the phone. Any idea what the problem is? Do I need a heat gun to remove the back cover?

Hi krobig,

Thanks for posting. We don't know exactly what's causing this issue. Have you ever dropped your phone? Does it have a liquid damage? For now, try to use Moto Help Application to diagnose this issue. Run a diagnostic on Moto Help App > Device Diagnosis > Hardware Test. Please let us know how it goes.

Best regards,

Mike

Question: Are the phone speaker and the loudspeaker two different speakers, or is this a combined function. It seems like the loudspeaker is at about the same volume as the phone speaker, because I have to hold the phone to my ear to hear what is being said in a video.

Hi krobig,

The phone speaker the one used for calling is located on the top of the phone is used for calls. The Loudspeaker is the one on the bottom and is used for playing media. Does the phone still has low sound even if you set it at max volume?

The most pertinent question I asked was, how do I remove the back cover. No one has responded. The Moto (help app) on my phone does not provide a device diagnostic.

On my phone, the diagnostic app is called Device Help. The speaker test was low volume and buzzy as I have described. The receiver test was negative (no ringtone sound) and failed the diagnostc.

Correction: The receiver test passed and the ringtone was normal volume, ie., loud. In the false negative test above, the SIM card was not installed. Receiver works fine. The speaker test was low volume and buzzy.

Hi krobig,

If the sound is still muffled during the hardware test, we suggest sending the phone to a service center for repair. Here is the link to get started: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/mcp/service/open/request?linkId=54149943
