Recently I started to get the message
"Gboard cannot open
Wrong Gboard version for your device
Please uninstall & downlaod correct version from Google Playstore"
This does not help as cannot uninstall it - can only delete updates
This cures the problem, but Gboard then updates itself & back to square one
Done clear cache & data but no help at all
Worked OK until about a week ago
Don't know if it is a real problem as have a keyboard of some form for typing
But no reference to Gboard in Settings or any keyboard for that matter
How do I know if i am using Gboard? (I think I am)

Playstore/3 bars top left/Settings/Auto-Update apps and Disable. You will still be prompted from time to time of app updates but can decide if you want the update(If it's working, don't fix it is my rule except my Anti-virus app).
Settings/Apps/Google Keyboard/Disable if you want to disable the Google keyboard but make sure you have another keyboard installed or you will have to re-enable it.
I like,"Perfect Keyboard",
It allows me to increase the size of the keys for my big Fingers
You might also be able to download Gboard separately and install it if you wish, can't remember,
Please give Kudos or correct answer where a pplicable.

Thanks, I have switched auto-update off just to see what happens.
Perfect Keyboard seems to be a demo unless you pay £3.09 for it. As I am tight I will wait a bit
I think this one is free if you wnat to try it,
