moto e5 plus randomly forgets the SD card and shows: Sandisk SD Card Missing

Randomly, my phone reboots for no apparent reason.  When it turns back on I get a 'SanDisk SD Card Missing' error, with the Storage menu showing 'Checking...'.

I've had this error persist for a entire day. Then after restarting show the same error message and fix itself after an hour of 'Checking...'.   I never know how long it will take to fix. It is very frustrating.

Looking at alot of Motorola posts for other models of phones, I see other people with this issue.

This has happened on the following MicroSD cards

  • SanDisk 64GB MicroSD XC A1
  • SanDisk Ultra 200GB MicroSD XC I

When I put it in a PC, it brings up 2 drives. One drive has 2 folders

  • .android_secure
  • Android

The other drive cannot be recognized and requires formatting to use (I don't format it)

On another note, despite being a 64GB card... Apparently only 32 GB is usable? Storage reads as 20.14 GB used of 32.00 GB.  What is up with that?

Here are my phone statistics:

  • Model: moto e5 plus
  • Software Varient: t
  • Software Channel: metropcs
  • Android version: 8.0.0
  • Android security patch level: March 1, 2019
  • Baseband version: m8940TMO_31.20.11.66R HANNAH_NA_TMO_CUST
  • Kernel version:

If it is a 64gb card and only 32 gb is available, my first guess is that it is a counterfeit card, as that is a usual symptom.

As for other reports - it really depends on how the card is used. Many are using them as adopted storage and this has a much higher corruption rate of SD cards.

If your card is spending a lot of time checking consistency, then this indicates a corrupt card. Like a pc, this can be caused by card hardware failure or OS/app crashes, or unexpected power off.

Sandisk usually has 5-10 year warranty on cards, so you can contact them to see if yours is covered.
