How to move apps to microSD card?

2017-03-10, 9:46 AM

How do I move the 'movable' apps from internal memory to SD card (formatted as portable storage device) in my Moto 4G Play?

In my previous G3 some apps had a 'move to SD card' option that I cannot find in this G4 Play.

Hi carlopipitone,

G4 Play was sold with Marshmallow update already. G4 Play has different functionality when it comes to moving apps to sd card than G3 with Lollipop. In order for you to move apps, you have to format your sd card as Internal storage for you to move apps. Formatting sd card as portable won't work as it will only serve as storage for medias like pictures, videos, and any other stuff. See this link for more details.

I have the Moto G4 not the "play". But on the G4, to move apps to the SD card, the SD card must be formatted as internal memory when you install it. Then, go to "Apps" in settings and click each app. Hit "Storage". The next screen will say "Storage" on top and then the name of the app. If the app allows you to move it there will be a "Change" button directly beneath the name of the app. Hit it and then choose "SD Card". You'll get another screen that asks you to actually move it so hit "Move". None of the Google apps or Lyft or Tripadvisor apps will allow you to move them. But apps such as Kayak, Messenger, Priceline, Stubhub and others can be moved.

You partition the sd card to allow both internal and external partition on the sd card.

This can work on locked and unlocked phones.

re. "As Internal Storage-"

This is TOTALLY INCORRECT information!

Since Android 6.0 you can NOT move ANY apps to an "added" MicroSD card whether formatted as continued Internal storage and New Installation will NOT install there EITHER!

Motorola (lame Lenovo) and Google have "Hosed" Us owners of Moto G's (any version) and they should be SUED as they have broken the implied contract as their specification SAYS Apps CAN BE moved to an installed SD Card!  If you own a 8BG or even 16GB model of a Moto G, please consider a Class Action Lawsuit, contac a CAL Lawyer in your area. Motorola / Lenovo / Google NEEDS TO FIX THIS NOW!
