Moto G4 Battery Drain and Heating Issue

2018-05-13, 16:22 PM

After using this phone for about 10 months, and loving it, it has suddenly started experiencing fast battery drain and heating issues. It will completely discharge in just a few hours with no use at all. I have disabled/uninstalled any unnecessary apps, and in looking at battery usage on the phone, there is nothing obvious eating the battery. I have cleared the cache and calibrated the battery, to no avail. I have experimented with turning off things like WIFI, Bluetooth, etc., and nothing seems to make a difference. In addition, the phone gets very hot at times, particularly when in my purse or sometimes when charging. I have updated my profile with my phone info. Please help me figure this out! I have added screenshots of the battery usage.

Hi LoriNis,

Your particular usage will affect how long you can go before recharging your battery. Navigating, playing games, surfing the Web, making calls and texting all use energy. You can install and use a wide variety of applications on your device, and each application has its own characteristics. You can visit this link for some tips to extend the battery life of your phone: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/indevice_detail/a_id/111311/p/30,6720,9686

A lot of factors affect the heat of your phone. Here are tips and tricks to better manage it: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Motorola-Owner-s-Blog/Keep-Cool/ba-p/3502758

I am aware of all those factors. My use of the phone did not change, but my battery life did, very suddenly. This is NOT an issue of the type of usage. My fully charged battery will completely drain injust a couple of hours just sitting there not being used.

Please provide some actual tech support pr direct me to someone who will.

Hi, LoriNis.

Thank you for trying the above steps, have you tried battery calibration already?  Calibration occurs by applying a full charge, discharge, and charge. Battery analyzers serve as a valuable tool to calibrate a smart battery. An analyzer fully charges the battery and then applies a controlled discharge that provides the all-important capacity readings of the chemical battery. Request you to repete the process twice every week.

Also, looking at your check-in data-- I do see that your device has active GPS most of the time running in the background and an app like Outlook is crashing very often consuming battery even when your phone is in idle mode as it needs to sync.

Just to narrow down the difference please remove "Outlook app" and perform calibration for few days and observe your device for a week, remove any application that consumes battery in the background which is not in much use. Let us know the observation?

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Swaraj

I have done the battery calibration and it didn't help. I have also experimented with turning GPS off and that hasn't helped either. However, I was just about to uninstall the Outlook app when I got your reply.  I will proceed and see what happens. Thank you.

I have found the problem app! It was Whattheforecast, a weather app. A recent update is causing the battery drain issue and uninstalling the app fixed my problem. I have reinstalled Outlook and phone appears to be behaving.
