Yes, but I asked about the "play" model, not plus model. And not if it has a hidden trick to use, but which notification method is normally used for that model. Being accurate is your friend.

Yes, but reading the threads it becomes apparent that there is no LED on any Moto phone for a few years, and that Moto Display is the notification method on all moto phones...

The answer applies to the Play as well.

Okay

But as I google around, the Moto Display and Moto Active Display, only works for Moto X, and some Droid models? Like in Google Store they mentioned that.

Every Moto phone has some version of Moto Display - here is the G4 play explanation on the official moto site

Click on the middle option to see Moto Display feature image

If you open the Moto app on your phone, that will show the options available for that device.

Moto Display and Active Display, as you no doubt are aware, are not the same thing. The research I have done indicates that there is a difference in how AMOLED screens work versus IPS LCD panels (the former allows for individual pixels to be turned on, and the latter turns on the entire screen) and this MAY explain why the Moto X2 uses Active Display and the G4 uses Moto display. I say "may" because there are reams of information on the web and not every "expert" seems to agree on the relevance of this issue. They don't even agree on which screen technology is better.

In any event, the G4's notification behavior does not function in the same way as certain other Moto phones, and that's just how it is. If you pick up the phone, or nudge it firmly, you will see if there are new notifications without unlocking it.

Nice!!

Thx a lot!

But now that moto is owned by lenovo, will that mean that new lenovo phones will also have some kind of the same notification system? Like the new and upcoming lenovo vibe c2 power? I know I asked about moto, but could not find any info in this forum or the web.

Of course, we can't know for sure, but last January, this was the stated plan from Lenovo and does mention that the two product lines will have different "experiences," whatever that may really mean:

"In January 2016, Lenovo announced that the "Motorola" name would be further downplayed in public usage, in favor of the Moto and Vibe brands, and that of Lenovo. In response to claims by a Lenovo executive that only high-end devices would be produced under the "Moto" name, with low-end devices being amalgamated into the Vibe brand, Motorola Mobility clarified its plans and explained that it would continue to release low-end products under the Moto brand, including the popular Moto G and Moto E lines. Motorola stated that there would be overlap between the Vibe and Moto lines in some price points and territories, but that both brands would have different "identities" and experiences. Moto devices would be positioned as "innovative" and "trendsetting" products, and Vibe would be a "mass-market challenger brand". The company went on to say that "the Motorola legacy is near and dear to us as product designers, engineers and Motorola employees, and clearly it's important to many of you who have had long relationships with us. We plan to continue it under our parent company, Lenovo."
