Moto G4 Plus SD Formatted as internal - reported as slow?

2017-01-18, 8:46 AM

I bought a new 32GB SD card with my new G4 Plus, and decided to format for internal use.

It set it up ok and everything seems to run alright, but after formatting on the phone it reported that the SD was slow, which I wasn't expecting.  Does this meet the preferred specs?

Or did I misread something?

I would make sure that the SD card that had been sold is not a fake

It's possible that the phone is reporting your SD card is slow as it's a UHS-1 (UHS-I Speed Class 1) microSD card, with a minimum write speed of 10 MB/s (despite what is written on the package). I noted on the Moto G4 support page they suggest a UHS-1 card, though I think that'll be too slow for being part of internal storage.

I'd suggest looking at a UHS-3 (UHS-I Speed Class 3) microSD card as they have a minimum write speed of 30 MB/s (and is Class 10 too), particularly if you're adopting it as internal storage. Check for a U and a number 3 inside the U, which indicates it's UHS-3 (if there's a number 1 inside the U, it's UHS-1).

Here's an example http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/memory-storage/memory-cards/micro-sd/MB-MG32EA/EU

Hopefully this issue isn't linked to your intermittent SIM loss though!

Hi Les_F,

We recommend customers to use SD card class 10. See this link for more information, thanks.

Yes, this is labelled as class 10, which is why I wasn't expecting the phone to report it was slow.

Hi Les_F,

Have you tried to use another sd card? Does that work? Have you tried to insert it into another phone?

If I insert it into another phone, I believe I would have to reformat it, as it has now been formatted for internal use with this phone only, or did I misunderstand something?

The other SD's I have access to are all lower spec that this one is supposed to be so I haven't tried any others yet.

The phone and apps seem to perform ok, after using it for a while, so I don't think I have a problem.  Is there a diagnostic tool which can tell me how well this SD is performing as internal storage?  What signs would there be that it's speed is a hindrance to normal/expected operations?

At this point I don't think I have an actual problem, tho I am still curious about the class 10 SD not meeting the expectations of the software on my phone during setup.

This helped me too

The link that a previous respondant posted https://www.sdcard.org/consumers/choices/application/ is well worth looking at.

I have the exact same sd card, but 128gb, and have the same problem. It reports the card is too slow, and when I try to transfer anything it fails and says there is insufficient storage!
