Re: Moto G4 SIM card not detected/dissapears

2016-11-01, 2:19 AM

Same here, Just bought 2 for me and my wife a week ago. Sim card disappears after 1 hour each time. This is obviously an OS problem or app. Hardware would go in and out at random. Can we please get some help on this. We really dont wanna switch to a different phone. anyone figure this problem out? New sim cards in both of them. Tried factory reset, network reset, safe mode, re-inserting the sim card. We need a patch for this bug and it would eliminate this problem. Lenovo PLEASE help. If you can fix this we will stay a reliable customer to the moto phones for years to come!

P.S. Will nougat android update fix this ISSUE on Moto G4 phones??

Re: Moto G4 SIM card not detected/dissapears

Well guys I think I may have sorted this issue on my brand new Moto G4... Being a bit of a tinkerer I always assume that if software and restarts and basic substitution have been tried and failed to resolve an issue I look at actual hardware.  In this case I looked at the interface between card and phone.  The first thing I noticed was that the card felt 'loose' in the slot, like nothing wanted to hold it there... Since there is no spring clip like on the Moto G2 I just upgraded from it was safe to assume that Moto are hoping that the springiness of the actual card contacts in the slot will be enough to do this.  Nope.  Those contacts are by far the flimsiest I've ever seen.  Put a card in once and it flattens them out.  Just resting your phone flat would be enough to create airspace between card and contact.  So... Maybe a little paper over the card to press it down onto the contacts? Nope. This just flattened them out even more.  So ( and Moto won't like this...) I used a fine pick to manually lift the contacts up then carefully reinserted the card.  HEY PRESTO! All seems OK now.  Basically peeps the manufacturer has gone with a very cheap replacement SIM slot to save a few pennies.

Hope this helps.

I would say it is more like a manufacturing issue. I have traded sim cards dozens of times in my dual sim g4, and fit is still tight.

's good that your phone appears to be working, and it is most likely a manufacturing issue, as suggests, but your solution is not for everyone. I've had the sim card in and out of my G4 several times while at Verizon for various reasons. Also, I personally would not advise anyone to stick a "pick" or any other object into the sim slot. If you break the pins, the repair would NOT BE covered by warranty.

Hmmm... Wonder if the issue is with single-sim ones?

Agreed, it's not a good idea for people to start pushing fork tines or somesuch into their phone.  It worked for me as I am a serial tinkerer and have a steady hand and light touch.  I too would recommend that the phone is returned for tech support.  I'm not going to lie about it however- unlike some.  I had a Moto g 2 that had loads of issues (like lots of other people) with the forced upgrade to a new OS.  The mods on here were all "it's your apps" but it wasn't.  And the next upgrade that was rushed through quietly fixed the issue.  So telling people that the SIM issue on G4's must be software related is a crock.  Simple explanations (even ones that blame the manufacturer or OS provider) should be out there too.

Having been involved with this forum for 3 years, I can say from my own observations, that the moderators do not shy away from explanations that point to faulty hardware. This isn't a 'fanboy' Moto club. You are entitled to your viewpoint, however, there are many problems that ARE directly related to software, to apps that do not work well with the OS (because they have not been updated for compatibility), to the carrier and/or their sims and network settings, and to other factors that have nothing to do with the hardware. I don't think generalizations are useful, and I personally take umbrage at the suggestion that people here, people who are trying to help, would lie intentionally about any particular problem. Also, your perception of what is true is your own, and your perception of what ailed your phone is also your own.

RevLauren your comments are well noted.  You speak from personal experience and so do I.  My personal experience (and not just on here) is that manufacturers are always way too quick to blame something the end user did or didn't do, than to entertain the notion that something may be amiss with their product.  My solution worked for me, and is still working.  While I do not suggest it is the way forward for everyone, it highlights a very real issue - those pins ARE too flimsy and are likely to cause the SIM problems people have experienced on this thread.  Tell me I'm wrong.

I wouldn't presume to tell you that your opinion is wrong, because it's your opinion, to which you are competely entitled, as I said earlier. But until some independent testing process has examined a substantial subset of the devices, and delivered an expert, fact-based conclusion, neither of us can be provably right or wrong. There appears to be nothing amiss with the sim slot pins in my phone (though I've had the sim out repeatedly), and they appear to be substandard in yours. At this point, the evidence is purely anecdotal, which is why I am reluctant to generalize. A character in a book once said, "I keep forgetting not to theorize ahead of my data."
