Moto G4 (US - unlocked) Nougat update *** Patch Feb 1, 2018 - KRACK vulnerability issue - wifi

2018-03-21, 21:53 PM

Hi! It's  been awhile since I have been on this board.  I have a question regarding the Nougat patch updates for Moto G4 only.

Recently I decided to do all the Nougat updates. I was tired of seeing the push notifications. So, after backing up my data I did manual updates through the settings - updating each patch in layers.  Happy to say I had success in downloading OTA.  (For those curious- phone is an unlocked model in US - it's prepay and not on Verizon although it used Verizon's towers). With that said, I thought I had the most current version.  Android 7.0 with December 1, 2017 patch Build number NPJS25.93-14.7-3.

As I started reading these forums, I saw where the PLAY version had a higher Android number. 7.1.1.

That had me puzzled.

So, I did some research and found that Dec 1, 2017 was not the latest patch for Moto G4.

I see per Moto's maintenance release notes that there is another one, Feb 1, 2018 to fix KRACK.

Weird thing is, though, that these notes were released on 1/24/18.  It's now 3/21/18.

I am perplexed as to why the manual check for software updates in settings doesn't pull this in.

I have tried multiple times and the phone says my device software is up to date.

The best I can assume is that this is available but still being tested????

  • Can anyone confirm this?
  • Any ETA?
  • Just wait for a PUSH notification?

To sum this inquiry up:

  1. Has anyone with the MOTO G4 in US received this Feb 2018 update?
  2. If so, how did you install?
  3. Are you with a specific carrier?
  4. Does this update change the version to Android 7.1.1.?
  5. Are there more Nougat updates to come after this?

Sadly, no OREO- huh.  (need I say ridiculous on that decision).

Thank you for reading.

I just wanted to update my inquiry. I have my answer.  I received a new OTA update today.

It is the February 1, 2018 patch.

Build number:   NPJS25.93.14.7-5

Still on Nougat 7.0  though.

Perhaps there will be more patches to come.  Seems other phones (play and G4+)  have higher Nougat versions???

I guess it's just a wait and see game for the G4 operating in US.

I am going to close out this inquiry.

Thanks for reading and thanks to anyone that got this update pushed through.

Looking forward to more patches.

Do you mean G4 Plus??? And your phone is in India?
Just wanted clarification to your reply. I don't have the G4 Plus, but if that is what you were adding that is good to know. Perhaps the G4 will at some point receive more updates to get to Nougat 7.1.2. Right now I am at 7.0 in the US. Thanks for your reply.

One more thing I wanted to add. Not sure if it makes a difference but in my settings the Software Channel reads: retus.

I recently received that update, and now my phone can't access the mobile data network. I received the update a few days ago (perhaps only a few days after you posted this question) and I can't get it to revert.

I have talked with my service provider (T-Mobile) and they can't figure out what's wrong. I've called the support line and went into a store location, but could not figure out what's wrong.

I remember getting a recent update back in January or so for the December patch and it worked fine. I've since tried completing a factory reset last night to see if that would fix it and it did not work - I am still without mobile data.

Not sure how you're using your phone but your device should be pretty safe. You might want to count your blessings after reading this.

On the bright side, Lenovo (Motorola) customer service has always been impeccable with me - so I will give them a call and try to figure out what's going on.

I know this probably doesn't help you, but just thought you should know.

Good luck!

MX??? I assume your location is Mexico. This might be a regional delay. Look to see in your settings what your software channel reads. Mine reads retus (which I believe is Retail United States) Your's probably reads something different. Not sure how these updates get pushed out but I remember reading somewhere that these updates are released region by region. That might be the issue right there. Try this. Power down your phone. Take out the sim card. Repower up the phone. Then go into settings and check for updates. Maybe this will by pass something and trigger it to be downloaded in a couple of day. Then power phone down and reinsert sim card and repower back up and wait. Really that's all you can do. I know when mine finally got updated it took a couple of minutes for it to repower back up. I got a little nervous but just left the phone alone. Eventually it repowered back up.
