We're going about this all wrong.  My new theory......Dear Lenovo/Motorola or whatever you call yourself,  please don't update me to Nougat. I don't want the update that you've been threatening me with some last year.  If you update me to Nougat or force another security update on me,  I'll never buy another of your phones again. You have been doing this to me since Android Cupcake and I'm tired of these senseless updates. ?

Re: Nougat update news for ALL G4

I asked Motorola UK yesterday. They "are working on" the Nougat release, but they "have no timeframe". So it will arrive ... eventually. Regarding security patches, they didn't bother tell me anything whatsoever, they simply ignored the question (I had a web chat with them). I told them I understood they didn't have more info, but somebody (HQ, developers) should have, so asked them to obtain that info and let us know. Myself, I'll wait if Nougat comes out in a few weeks time, but if they say it will arrive, let's say, only late summer, then I will sell my handset and buy a non-Motorola one with Nougat right out of the box. Problem is, I doubt they'd let us know any time before the update actually rolls out...

I just think we're being treated like mugs. We buy into the product, get no updates since July 2016 and we have no idea of when Nougat will be released. We ask and get canned responses: "We have no timeframe" - what kind of answer is that. If you (Lenovo) don't have a timeframe, that means your project management team needs to be fired. And on top of that, you need to communicate updates with us, the consumer; you know, the ones who buy your products.

I've been a customer since the original Moto G (falcon model) and i've stuck by only to get canned responses, no transparency when it comes to the OS, no regular security updates and honestly...product quality go down. My G4 Plus has the dreaded screen burning issue. That's why i'm running out of patience with Lenovo/Moto products.

Considering its now 2 months since the roll out started in India. I can't believe the roll out to other areas has been so laboured. Bugs or not, does it really take this long to iron them out and distribute it to all other areas?

Well yes, when you're run by incompetent people and you've laid off most of your support it will take that long. I suspect their android source tree looks much like a dartboard.

Got lineageOS installed on my original Moto G. Smooth, slick, Nougat, recent patch, weekly updates.... I've always advocated official software and my G4 Plus is stock but how do a bunch of community developers provide, test and maintain constant builds on a wide range of vendor handsets and vendors cannot?

There's no excuse for Lenovo's total disregard and disrespect for their customers quite honestly.

Not so much "disrespect" as a difference of opinion as to where best to invest resources - hardware design or software maintenance.

I think Lenovo has miscalculated the how much of the goodwill value of the Moto brand depends on front-of-the-line OS updates and version upgrades versus how much depends on the historical marketing ("Hello Moto!").  But that's the kind of bias I'd expect a laptop and PC maker to have.  The corporate culture is hardware centric - pack as much as you can into the hardware for as little cost as possible.  They probably do this better than old Moto.

Problem is, that what their principal low-to-mid range competitors are good at, too.  OnePlus, Huwawei, HTC, Xiaomi, etc.  Competing on price and specs is nothing more than a catalyst for commoditization and a race to the bottom on the margin front.  Goodwill is a valuable differentiator in a commoditizing segment.  I suspect they will wake up eventually and hire some more Andorid software developers to accelerate updates and new version rollouts.  That plus vanillia Android could keep them at the top of the segment heap indefinitely.

Without differentiation through better, fresher software, though, they're just another commodity handset maker.
