I'm a bit worried. I read about many problems with Android 7.0 - random freezes, malfunctioning apps, battery drain issues etc. Some users had to do a factory reset and install / set up manually from scratch again. Some others had no solution till date. I read that Indian Moto G4 Nougat users had problems too. I hope everything will be alright and also that Motorola/Lenovo brings out a 7.1 upgrade soon (that is, not a year from now... but in a few months hopefully...)

These problems were known and Lenovo has had number of months to correct them and issue 7.1 which presumably resolves lot of these issues if they wanted. Instead they just keep pushing out Soak test builds where and when they feel like. I am not saying they dont push real builds, but I dont know which is soak test and which is real. Good luck waiting for 7.1 update for Lenovo. I am not sure if they really know there is an update on android to 7.1. Maybe they do .. or maybe ..

Customers who are asked to participate in soak tests KNOW that they are getting a soak test. Customers who get a notification on their phones that an update is available are receiving an official release from Moto. Whether the updates are timely is a matter for debate, but perhaps it would be wise to consider that as of February 7, according to figures released by Google, not even ONE PERCENT of all Android phones are running Android 7.0 -- specifically .9% ... and 7.1 is installed on far fewer, just .3%

People may hold whatever opinions they wish about whether Moto is doing an adequate job of supporting the G4 series, but the actual data does not support an assertion that the company is failing to keep up with the rest of the industry vis a vis OS updates.

Re: Nougat update news for ALL G4

That's a rather silly and in this context meaningless stat (i.e., less than 1% of Android devices are running Nougat).  This is a discussion not about all of the millions of andorid devices in current use, including millions purchased many years and generations ago.  This is a discussion about the G4 which was a 2016 phone line, and Moto which built its reputation and business on fast, frequent updates and pure Android, where the new owner, Lenovo, committed publicly to supporting new Android OSes through "O" for these devices as an inducement to get people to buy them.

In this context (new phone line, brand history of rapid updates, express Lenovo promises of future OS upgrades for these devices) what is relevant is whether the long delay for Nougat (many other 2016 devices from other makers have Nougat; even mollases-slow Samsung and flyweight OnePlus) in this case contravenes the expectations of buyers who relied on one or more of the factors I list in selecting a G4.  It is those buyers and not the irrelevancy that "no one with a 2013 Nexus tablet has Nougat either", that will determine whether Moto retains, gains or loses market share in the G4 segment.

In my opinion they blew it in bringing out the G5 BEFORE updating the G4s to Nougat.  They also blew it in bringing out the G5 with 7.0 rather than 7.1.  It signals that Lenovo Moto isn't the old Moto with regard to investment in staying current with Android releases.  That will cost them repeat business and erode brand value and customer loyalty.  Basically the pure Android and rapid updates are the only thing that historically differentiated the G from any other mid tier alternatives.  If Lenovo surrenders that differentiator, it might as well drop the G and stick to flagships.

astrotraveler : Well said, exactly my toughts. Also, it's the lack of security updates. It's now March 2017 and my G4 is still on 1 July 2016 patch level - EIGHT months old... It's hard to find any other 2016 or even 2015 phone, even in the budget category, that has this old patch...

I am also onthe 1 july 2016 patch level. I contacted Motorola On the lack of security updates. This was their   answer

"Motorola is committed to implementing essential security patches. As new security issues emerge, we will evaluate them and update your phone as needed. We are normally one of the quickest manufacturers that release Android updates as seen on several of devices in 2016. " To me if feels like they are saying you should have bought a moto X or Z. Or maybe there saying go live in India. I'm not using the phone now as it has an known and very well documented root exploit "Dirty COW (CVE-2016-5195)".  Perhaps Motorola should seek help with LineageOS because they seem to be able to do what motorola can't.
