Re: 5 Plus on Verizon - very poor call quality

VoLTE also allows you to talk over Verizon's Band 13 (700 MHz), which in some cases can penetrate buildings better than the frequencies they use for traditional CDMA voice.  In areas where Verizon has licenses for the 850 MHz cellular band (A and/or B-side) the difference probably won't be enough to notice, since 700MHz and 850Mhz have similar propagation characteristics, but in areas where they have to use the 1900MHz PCS band for CDMA voice (like my corner for FL, where AT&T owns both 850MHz-band licenses) it can be more significant.

I'd say the FCC screwed up a bit when dividing up some of the 700 MHz frequencies after these were reclaimed from UHF television, making the "upper C block" used by Verizon only 11 MHz wide, which isn't enough for both a 10MHz LTE carrier as well as CDMA voice (1.25 MHz plus guard bands) side-by-side.  12 MHz would have been enough room.  Instead they created 1 MHz narrowband licenses on either side that are too small for just about any modern cellular technology (a few 2G GSM carriers could fit, or the old Nextel iDen, etc), and so remain unused across most of the country.

Hi, understood about no internet via cell net service but what about receiving calls if I am on cell only app and Enhanced LTE is off? Lets say i am on google maps driving around. Would that cause issues with receiving a call?

I don't think it causes issues with receiving calls when using data like that, but not certain if that specific scenario has happened to me yet, so I can't say for sure. If anything it might make the navigation stop working temporarily while on the call but won't prevent from receiving the call.

Yes, in this situation Verizon will use the LTE data channel to notify your phone of the incoming call. It will then re-tune its radio and switch modes to CDMA 1x to actually receive the pending call, which results in interruption of the data connection. This takes only a fraction of a second, and happens right before your phone starts ringing, so the temporary data-link loss happens even if you choose not to answer. LTE data comes back within a few seconds of the call hanging up (choosing "Dismiss" on one you don't want to take may get data back earlier, but I haven't tested this on Verizon).

This automatic switching mechanism is called CSFB (Circuit-Switched Fall-Back), and has been part of the LTE standard from the beginning, necessary since not all phones are capable of VoLTE, and some cellular networks (like Sprint's) haven't even deployed VoLTE on their end.

Really want this phone for it's battery life and mid-range features, as I do not need every high end feature/poor battery life. I'm waiting on a fix for the Verizon call/LTE data problem everyone has.

If there's no fix or indication of it being worked on, I will have to opt for another brand.

After reading through all of this, it doesn't seem like they care to fix this issue, or even give any information pertaining to a fix.

Lets hope we get more information!

Hello everyone, if you're using the phone on Verizon, can you got to Settings and check for an update. Let me know if there is one available. If so, please install it and let us know if it's better.

Maybe try a  restart? Also, it looked like one of the test type updates. Didn't look real close but if that's the case, are you registered for the testing? Hope we can all get it and this takes care of it....

I tried to get the update both with the sim in, and the sim out with a restart. No update available. Isn't this why we provided our IMEI's? Do we know when the update will definitely be available Tom?
