Make a note of your installed apps and also your APN settings as your ISP may not supply configuration information automatically again as your IMEI number will not change.  Don't just restore all apps, but only restore the ones you actually use. The Google playstore keeps a record of all apps you have ever installed from there so you won't lost this information. However, apps not from Google playstore will need you to reinstall from the vendor that supplied them in the first place.Now you can start the factory reset which **should** get you working with equal or better performance/battery economy than Nougat.

Just chipping in to say that in my case too, after Oreo update the battery does deplete faster. My phone did used to last for nearly 2 days with reasonable use of mobile data and WiFi, both being switched off at night. Now, with only WiFi on, the phone barely manages to scrape through 12 hours.

@ bdutta74

Normally a Moto will do only 10-12 hours on normal operations. The 2-3 days is when she is new out of the box with no additional apps like Facebook, Whatsapp, etc. After a year a normal average user will barely hold 10-12 hours. No matter what brand. That is what a smart phone gives you . Now Oreo came with different services and your setup might have changed. So you need to check a few things. Also under setup, battery you can see where battery usage went. A great help. Brighter screen use more energy. Can be anything . Oreo gave me more battery life, but I cleaned my mobile before the upgrade and also gave a 64 Gb memory card instead of the 32 Gb

My experiences on nougat were less favourable

Thanks. Appreciate the views. I am very prudent about the number, type of apps and how/when I use mobile data, WiFi, screen brightness and lockscreen timeout. The difference (before and after the upgrade) is pretty remarkable, which is why I thought of sharing the observation. It deserves the engineering looking into the report.

Obviously Oreo is different like any operating system from another. So there are significant changes allways. That incorporates the danger that some phones with some configurations might get into problems. This applies to expensive iPhones also.  Doe an upgrade guarantee better performance. Usually not, they are usually bigger, use more services, consume more memory and hence will demand from your battery unless you give in. For the average this means buying a new phone every 2 years to keep up to date or try to stick in as was when you bought yours.

Re: Battery Life problem after update

Another user tossing in their data point on this battery issue with Android 8.1.0.

The battery usage on my G5 Plus 64GB RETUS model appeared to drain more than normal once the phone was updated to 8.1.0. Tried a variety of erasing the cache, drain battery completely before charging, leave the phone on a charger for an hour or more after being fully charged, using Wake Lock Detector app to see what apps were running or waking the phone up, using a non Moto branded charger so the phone doesn't enter TurboCharge mode, and a few other things. Nothing really seemed to work. Phone would fully drain, under very light usage, in less than two days. Previously the phone would go 3 to 4 days (yes 3 to 4 days) under light usage before needing to be charged.

Performed a phone backup so all apps/data was backed up to Google Drive, used SMS Backup app to backup SMS texts and phone calls. Performed a factory reset and a cache wipe. Then restored the backup(s) to the phone. Charged the phone using a non Moto charger so it didn't enter TurboCharge mode. The phone now seems to be back to almost normal battery usage that is had on Android 7.0. Will monitor to see if anything changes.

@bennor3814,

Many thanks in giving a thorough feedback and full exercise you performed. The profesional way to go about and join this thread conversation. That is the spirit to join the team in solving the problem.

Mind you nor me or EdT have any connections with Lenovo or Motorola and are just fellow users and commentators/ spectators in what has become a long thread. So you prove again it can be done without doing not done tricks.

Also today I noticed Motorola added a diagnostic utility to diagnose your hardware components. Get repair , support and price quotes. Like hey, mine is fine. But they sure make it easy on you.

But hey, if you like apple or any other better, why stay and not buy those . I guarantee you will return. Actively using my G5 whole day and get 14-16 hours doing stuff. I hardly use my PC.

Also having significant battery issue after update. Moto G5 Plus 64gb Amazon version. I'm getting less than 24 hours from a full charge (~19). Before the update I easily got 36 to 48. I went as far to do a complete factory reset. Phone is 100% charged when I go to bed and completely drained by 4pm.

Did you replace all your apps without reviewing them?  After a factory reset, it is worth sticking to just a few apps initially - those you actually use regularly - and then monitor power usage. Not all apps are necessarily OREO compatible and may cause issues with the upgraded O/S.
