Got November 2017 security update today on retus channel

2018-02-05, 20:55 PM

As expected, the Armis Blueborne Scanner app now shows that my G5 Plus is not vulnerable; it showed vulnerable with the previous August patch level. Deleted the app.

I found out it was available because a notification appeared on my phone. Although I had been checking for updates since other channels started receiving it, there was actually no need for me to bother.

I'm in Canada with a RETUS version G5+.

I can confirm: November 1,2017 update is live.

So, it took 5+ months to go from Aug.2017 security version, updated to Nov.2017 security version.

Note: I just looked at something from Google called 'Android One'.  Apparently any phone on that list (depending on your country) gets priority updates, likely monthy.   There is a Motorola phone among other options, but of course it's only the newest Moto model.

So, if I want frequent security updates - apparently my best bet is one of those phones or a Blackberry or Apple phone. At least I know what to do next time...

If you want fast updates, I'd recommend Google Pixel 2 or the Xiaomi's Android One phone. It gets security updates every month.

I'm not spending that kind of cash on Pixel 2, that will not be updated beyond 2-3 years anyway.

Xiami Mi A1, although a good price, doesn't have the required bands to operate at full capacity, either here in Ontario,Canada or many places in the United States.  So that particular Android One Xiami option wouldn't work.

The Moto X4 phone is on the Android One list and would work just fine - but I've already spent good money on my G5+ (4gb/64gb version), so I'm not about to spend money again very soon.

Next time - yes, I'll be looking into other options.

Foreseeable events that might trigger my replacing my G5 Plus:

1) Availability of, and need for, 5G or other new technology.

2) Unusability of the phone due to an unpatched security issue.

3) Cessation altogether of security patches.

4) Lack of updates to the latest version of Android ONLY if it contains some necessary or highly desirable feature (which Oreo, which we will get, doesn't).

5) Loss of or serious damage to the phone.

Unless something changes drastically, the replacement would need to run Android, due to the superiority of Google Assistant to Siri and lack of any other option.

At the moment, for those needing a phone, Android One looks good. The Android One X4 is temporarily on sale for $250, with Project Fi signup, down from the usual $400. I paid $300 for my G5 Plus.

By the time I need a replacement, the landscape may be different. For example, Android's Project Treble may (or may not) bring more rapid updates.

@MotoUser17:

Well stated sir.
I agree with all your points and certainly wouldn't hesitate to pick up the Moto X4 at it's current price, if I needed a new phone.

Since I'm a stickler for deals and a known penny pincher, I'm not about to toss the towel in on the G5+ until there's very good reason(s).
