First try enabling System ui tuner by long pressing the settings icon⚙️ in notification panel.
Then go to settings > system UI tuner > status bar > toggle Headset.
Then insert your earphones and check if phone is showing this icon 🎧 in notification panel or not.
Though, yes or no, it's a good idea to check whether the earphones working or not by inserting it in other phones.
Based on your reply, next guidance will be given.

I doubt, earphones are not fully plugged in into 3.5mm jack.
Push it little more. Or take a pic and show us so that we can decide whether you inserted properly or not.
New phones or new earphones are very hard to push the male pin. So make sure it inserted fully.
And what did you try to play which you heared in phone instead of earphones?

The earphones ARE fully plugged into the 3.5 mm jack. I get the headphone icon up top.
I pushed it all the way in, and it's 100% inserted properly. I did it with a few headphones too.
ANd when I try to play music, it STILL comes from the phone speaker. When I try to play YouTube videos the same.
However, I just had a call and the headphones worked for the call.

It's actually still not working. When the headphones are plugged in, all the noise comes from the phone. When I make a call the headphones work, then the headphones are recognized and I can listen to music through them, etc.
So basically I need to make a call to get the headphones to work. However, every reset makes it play through the phone again.

I have the same problem.
I used the app 'Device Help' > FIX (tab) > Hardware tests > Audio jack, to test whether the jack is recognized.
And it is not.
I will have to check with other headphones, however the headphones with which I do the test do work with other devices.
How did you solve it?
