I've purchased the G5 thinking that the dual sims were both 4g/3G capable. It appears that after setting the first sim to 4g the second sim is automatically locked to 2g. Is this the case? If so I've wasted my time waiting to upgrade from G4.

There is no such thing as two slots will work with 4G/3G at the same time. Of course, if your sim slot 1 is set to 4G/3G, the other one will automatically be set to 2G. You can only use 1 sim for 4G/3G at a time. If you set your 2nd SIM to 4G/3G, the first slot will automatically be set to 2G. There is no 4G and 3G set on the phone at the same time either.

Thankyou for your reply.
with the 2g network being shutdown in many countries, the whole purpose of the dual sim function becomes redundant if it is locked to 2g.
reading through these forums it appears the the MOTO G5 plus and G4 plus have the ability to switch the second sim to 3G or 2g once the first sim has been set to 4g.
Am I misreading the specs in these forums?

That's what I thought. I know that 4g on both sims is not possible at the same time.....but the second sim should be able to be set to 3G for voice.
Just want to get a correct answer as most specs onsite list the capability.

Sorry for late reply but what MotorolaJess said is incorrect - the G4+ dual Sim most certainly CAN provide 2G/3G/4G on sim1 and provide 2G/3G on sim2 at the same time.
Sim2 will no be data capable BUT it still works as a 3G voice capable Sim while Sim1 is a 3G/4G voice+data sim.
The G5 has (stupidly) removed this feature and gone back to how most dual SIM phones are which is as you describe, the sim2 will always be a 2G only sim when sim1 is set for voice+data.
Here is a video showing the G4+ dual sim working in 4G and 3G on both sims together.

yes it's been a long haul to find the answers. Two online calls to Motorola failed to get the correct answer. Their response was to say it was a "carrier" problem not the phone??
But it was disappointing that the G5 was released without the 4g/3G facility.

Having bought from and returned to Amazon, I can confirm the "G5 Dual SIM" ONLY supports 4G/3G on SIM1 and 2G on SIM2 (or visa versa). Hopeless for use with THREE in UK, AT&T in USA, etc.
