Re: Moto G5+ G5 Plus Battery Swelling Bulging Lifting Screen up 4mm. What????

Today's development: I spoke with the Moto G5 Plus (aka G5+) owner and forwarded them this page link. We're both business people and have come to the conclusion that handing over Lenovo/Moto another $93.75 (that was their "best possible resolution" by the way, ha ha), would as they say, "be throwing good money at bad money".

The owner agrees that it's smarter to take the ~$300 loss now, and scrap the phone for whatever we can get for it. It doesn't make good business sense to add another ~$100, and now have a $400 phone, that could possibly need another ~$100 repair eighteen months from now. And if that repair only lasts another 18 months, we could be looking at a $500 total investment in a 5 year period for a $300 mid-class phone. Not worth it and not worth the aggravation.

Regards . . .

I agree with your asssesment....and that is what they WANT!

You go out and buy a new phone -- they no longer have to support it, and Android sells you another license....you may even buy another Motorola......everyone wins except the customer here.

This whole "upgrade" scheme is -- in my opinion -- "planned obsolesence" at its very best.

Shame on them.

Re: Moto G5+ G5 Plus Battery Swelling Bulging Lifting Screen up 4mm. What????

A Correction to the Original Post:

In the interest of information accuracy, I'm making the following addendum/correction to my original post of 11/24/2018 (I would just edit that post but Edit is no longer available) :

I said, "I noticed that the LCD glass on the phone was bulging swelling expanding lifting up about 4mm on bother sides of the phone." That is incorrect becuase I was reading the "16th Inch" side of my ruler, and not the millimemeter side.

As of today, it should correctly read, "I noticed that the LCD glass on the phone was bulging swelling expanding lifting up 2mm on the power button side of the phone, and 1mm on the the other side (see picture attached." It's still a FAIL any way you look at it.

Sorry for the oversight.

Re: Moto G5+ G5 Plus Battery Swelling Bulging Lifting Screen up 4mm. What????

Your story, and two others found just like it online made me concerned so.....I called Moto.

I spent a considerable amount of time on the phone yesterday with a Moto level 3 tech supervisor.

After we got through all of his recitation of the boilerplate he has to say (inclduing the part about how technically Moto and Android own the rights to change the phone you and I bought at ANY time and if it bricks, well, that is just the lumps that come with thye contract you and I "sign" when we spend our hard earned money on one of these devices), he basically said he understood what I was saying but that "it is what it is".   We discussed options and he confirmed that if my phone were to brick, and if my phone were under warranty, I would eventually get a refurbished (someone else's problem phone) in exchange that they would set up and test.  It would have the remainder of any orginal warranty of my original phone.

HE also confirmed that eventually the OS "upgrade" would happen automatically -- which is exactly what happened to my Samsung $800+ flagship phone which bricked it out of warranty.

So it made sense to try it now rather than wait.

Did the update yesterday.  It said it would take 10 minutes....more like 30......and thats with clearing my cache and uninstalling most of my apps and then restarting.

So far, things work ok. It didnt brick so far.  It did feel hot while doing the "upgrade".

Nothing new that makes any difference to me so far to have wanted to go thru the risk, other than now I wont see all the notifications to "upgrade to oreo".

Battery life, though, so far seems worse....charged it to 100% after the update and was at less than 50% by a few hours later , albeit that with some email and text usage along with Pandora/bluetooth.

100% charge  this morning when I left my house and was already down to 90%.   an hour later after my commute....All I was doing was using Pandora to play music via bluetooth because I was driving -- no texts, no emails etc..   Before the "upgrade" I would be at 97% after my commute. Dropped down to 89% after sitting idle for a good 45 minutes.  So I guess time will tell, hopefully it will stablize.

Going to start installing my required apps again and see what happens.

I am praying it all settles out and that I can just use my phone as-is for a long time.

Re: Moto G5+ G5 Plus Battery Swelling Bulging Lifting Screen up 4mm. What????

I've had batteries swell up in both my Moto G2 and my Moto G5 phones. (The battery in the Moto G5 is a replaceable one; the battery in my Moto G2 in not.) In the case of the G2, the swelling battery caused the face (screen) of the phone to separate from the case. In the case of the G5, the swelling battery caused the back of the case to open. In both cases, the swollen batteries represented a fire hazard and so I tossed out the G2 phone and the swollen battery of the G5. Now, I'm referring to "Motos" as "Bozos"! No more "Bozos" for me! Years ago, I had the Motorola Razr, which was a great phone and lasted until I replaced it with a smartphone. I have to think, therefore, that the shoddy quality of my G2 and G5 is due to Lenovo buying Motorola. I now have a Huawei P30, and it is terrific!

Hi,

Thanks for chiming in. May I ask which Huawei P30 are you talking about? I see some of them are ~$600. The Moto g4+ was ~$300.

Re: Moto G5+ G5 Plus Battery Swelling Bulging Lifting Screen up 4mm. What????

The battery swelling issue has become a major concern for our company as well.  We have a number of the phones (>200) deployed and fully 15% of them are experiencing this issue.  I have been in communication with Support (truely a misnomer) but thus far have not received any help . . . .just kicking the can up the road.  Once they are out of warranty, no one cares.  The potential fire hazzard is a major concern and replacing all of these will be very expensive.  Extremely disappointed in the response to a potentially hazardous scenerio.

Re: Moto G5+ Battery swelling, ordering and shipping errors.

Hello All,

I'm a first time poster, retired Law Enforcement and was a fan of both companies but this story had to be shared. I have & have had several Motorola & Lenovo products in both professional and layperson capacity.

I had the same issue with my G5+, which I've had for about 2+ years. It started early June 2019.

The swelling wasn't noticed at first as I carry it in a rubberized case. I first noticed it after it started to push itself out of the case on the left side (away from the control buttons.) This caused light to escape from that side making the buldging un apparent until it was out

of it's case.

I like my phone and tried to change the battery with an aftermarket kit from Amazon when I discovered the swelling however as they make it almost impossible to do so without damaging something in the process.., Ultimately,I was left with a defective screen on the lower 1/3" and a black spot in the lower r-corner.

As timing is everything, I just happened to catch the Dad's & Grad's sale on the Moto X4 Android One and ordered one on June 15th, when I saw how complicated & delicate a battery change could be, but after debating the purchase I changed my mind only to be told that they have a 30 minute window for cancellations. This I found out about 2 hours later. Really?!?

Apparently the order was already in their system and could not be stopped as it had been sent to the shipping department, even though this was the weekend, and they (shipping) were closed till Monday.

The delivery was scheduled for within a week, after it was initially advertised for a couple of days.

After I explained contract law and the 3 day rule, and that Amazon had the same phone w next day delivery, for the same price they said I could ultimately reject their delivery from UPS when it arrived and could order it from Amazon who was an authorized dealer, however the order stayed.

I changed the battery on June 16th and the results were as mentioned. The phone wasn't shipped till the next day when it was initially due to arrive to me in Nevada.

Well, today is June 24th, and the phone is finally due to arrive sometime today according to UPS after 3 delays/postponements not to mention issues associated to proof of purchase documentation.

I guess customer service is a thing of the past and contract law doesn't apply to Lenovo.

Re: Moto G5+ G5 Plus Battery Swelling Bulging Lifting Screen up 4mm. What????

I am experiencing the very same issue right now! I noticed a glow on the side of my phone, took my case off and discovered that my screen is bulging on both sides of my Moto G5 Plus!! What the hell?? I can see light on both sides!

I am approaching 2 years of having this phone with no issues. Now I'm afraid that the screen is going to expand too much and crack or pop off and potentially injure me!

Re: Moto G5+ G5 Plus Battery Swelling Bulging Lifting Screen up 4mm. What????

Im actually having the same exact problem, but it seems like a huge pain to try and get the issue resolved. I'm actually a military spouse and my family is stationed in South Korea right now, so that just adds another level of frustration to everything involving customer service. We're not going to be able to afford to pay for anything else either. I have another baby on the way and we budgeted this phone to last at least 4 hopefully 5 years (purchased on black Fri in 2017). I guess i can write in and try to plead my case, but either way im stuck with this defective phone until i can save up to purchase a new one. Hopefully this one last me until this coming black friday.
