Re: Moto G5 Plus - wifi problem

2018-08-19, 1:37 AM

Updates:

  • I was at friends' house last night for several hours.  They have the Google WiFi mesh network.  My Moto G5 Plus phone connected to their PRIMARY network with NO problems and STAYED CONNECTED ALL NIGHT.  I never had to move to their guest network for connectivity.
  • As soon as I got home, I tried to connect to my primary network - my phone said it was connected in WiFi settings, but nothing was working.  As soon as I moved to my guest network, everything worked.
  • Prior to going to our friends' last night, I did stay connected to my primary network (see earlier update).  HOWEVER, although I was getting the pings that I had mail, I was unable to read the contents of the emails.  As soon as I moved to my guest network, I could read the email contents.  I also was unable to use the Google WiFi Manager app on my primary network; it worked only on my guest network.
  • I am on Consumer Cellular (on AT&T).  There is no WiFi Manager like the other person mentioned in a recent update.  I checked the MyConSumerCellular app - nada.  So that is not my issue.

Mysteries:

  • Why won't my Moto 5G Plus work on my primary network on my Google mesh network at home but it connects and works perfectly on my friends' primary network on their Google mesh (they also have 3 "pods)?
  • Do I have a defective Google pod or pods?
  • My 5G Plus worked perfectly fine on my 2011 Apple Time Capsule router (+ 2 Apple network extenders).  So the phones connect on the primary network on a 7-year-old system but not on a new mesh system.  Obviously there is a handshaking/protocol/whatever problem between Lenovo for the G5 Plus and Google WiFi mesh network.

HOWEVER, we all know here from this forum that there IS a true defect in the 5G Plus phone, and Lenovo has a fix (or fixes).  WHEN WILL THE FIX BE AVAILABLE?

Is Lenovo talking to Google WiFi on a probable -- and most likely -- interface problem between the 5G Plus and Google mesh network?

I have an open case ID with Google WiFi since July 27 (I installed on July 26) because of the 5G Plus issues.  I have not heard from Google since I provided PD info July 27 and July 28.  I will call them this coming week. I plan on calling Lenovo, too.

My friend suggested I try dedicated IP addresses for our phones (if we can ever get them to connect long enough on our primary network) instead of using DHCP -- he read through this forum and saw that someone else had success with this.  It's worth a try.  I will post my results.

I had the cricket app installed on my phone and had to go through the app to get to the wifi manager.  So if you don't have that app you might want to download it and try to get to that setting.

Great, I had one instance when I was outside, in and out of my router coverage, when it was a little slow in connecting. But other than that it connects when I come home and stays connected.

It's been 3 days and so far this solution is working for me. An update to that cricket app must have defaulted that setting to ON, because I've had this phone for a couple years and this wifi issue only started recently.

I still think there is some kind if issue with the antenna because even when I'm standing right in front of my home router, I don't have full bars in my wifi connection.

The jury is out on reserving an IP address via the Google WiFi app for my phone on the primary network instead of using DHCP.  Yes, it connects and stays connected.  I get email, but I find things are sluggish.  I also cannot always read the contents of emails.  The Google WiFi app takes longer to connect to the network devices and provide data, but it eventually works.

Then I go back to my guest network, all is great.

There is MOST DEFINITELY an issue between Lenovo Moto G5 Plus and the Google WiFi mesh network system relating to the primary.  But again, it's very very weird, too, since my phone worked absolutely perfectly on our friends' Google WiFi mesh network on their primary network (NOT the guest) the other night but is a sick puppy at home.

Too bad the problem was not consistent.

Bad WiFi pod or pods?

I noticed that the cricket app updated again last night and killed my wifi connection. I checked to make sure the wifi manager was still off and it was. I reconnected and it has stayed connected ever since.

Re: Does the Oreo update offer any hope of a fix?

Any news as to when this will be corrected? I am chewing though my data plan because of this and like someone else mentioned, the new phone is already being released.

I am also on Cricket and my WiFi manager has always been shut off and I have been having this problem

Since I turned off wifi manager on Cricket I have not had any wifi issues. I'm no longer attributing it to any Moto 5g+ security update.
