Ok, italian user here. I have been aware of this thread for a while and been following it from time to time to get news. Now that I got the notification and have finally recevied the update, I want to thank all the developers for the effort they put in, and I want also to say that my next phone is not going to be a Motorola.

I wanted to get a phone with frequent updates, and Motorola was one with the G2 and G3 generations. Now with Lenovo leading the strategy seems to not be that anymore, so I won't buy another Motorola after this.

We haven't updated yet because we thought there were issues and problems with the 8.1 Oreo update. I have a G5 Plus, wife has a G5s Plus.
Is all well and safe with the Oreo 8.1 update?
I'm sick and tired of all the annoying "Update Available" reminders and couldn't find a way to stop them.

The only issue I've had is with the fingerprint sensor. It works when it feels like it. Done a factory reset and deleted my stored fingerprints. Tried to retrain but took over an hour to get there. I have a G5+

Hi Zeke.

I have a G5 Plus and updated to Oreo 8.1 a couple of weeks ago. I can tell you that all is fine in my case after the upgrade, with two exceptions:

1. Battery seems to drain a bit faster, but nothing serious in my case. I'm not a gamer so I'm not an intensive user, just a normal one using applications and I use it to work as well. Battery lasts about two days tops.

2. When turned on, ocassionally the SIM is not detected. After restarting the phone, this is solved. Could be the SIM, or could be Oreo 8.1 (with Android 7.0 this never happened for a year use). I keep monitoring this, I may ask for a replacement SIM to discard that.

For the rest I have to say I like Oreo 8.1. Is the most current Android OS version, which is quite good to have it in our phones. If you do the upgrade, just give some days or a week to the OS to stabilize, slowly will get better and faster.

I can understand your concerns regarding the upgrade. I had before a G3 with Android 5.1 and when 6.0 come available, I read here that there were a lot of issues with G3 and 6.0. I did never do the upgrade becasue of that, but was another hardware, with less memory and CPU,  not like the G5 Plus. I did it this time and I'm happy with that.

Hope this helps to decide what to do.

Regards.

@Zeke956.

I was very hestitant to update from 7.0 to 8.1 as well but finally did almost a week ago. (Moto G5+ 4/64 - Retus channel)

Everything is fine - but here's what I did to alleviate the chances of something screwing up:

(1)  Backup (seems to do it automatically)

(2) Remove sd card

(3) Factory Reset - do NOT input credentials yet. Skip restore.

(4) Update to 8.1

(5) Factory Reset - now input your credentials and restore apps

(6) Input sd card

(7) Test

The reason I did it this way, is because simply updating via the prompt has caused problems for some people ranging from inoperable phone calls, dropping Wifi and/or 4g connection issues etc.

I have noticed my battery stanby time has increased.

I also know a couple days ago I managed a 5+ hour on-screen time before I felt like recharging (25% battery left), which for me was an improvement.

In terms of amazing functions in 8.1?  Who knows - I could care less about picture in picture, or notification dots or types of notifications.  I never really had any issues with 7.0 to begin with.

I suppose a further breakdown of what's using your battery is useful in 8.1 but it's not going to blow your mind.

I'm sure there are behind the scenes improvements going on, but in terms of my user experience - a better battery life is about all I've cared about.

For all I know - it was the Factory Reset that has improved the battery - not the actual operating system update.
