Sahil71 Correct your post. You typed your message in the Message Tags instead of in the body.

It appears like a jumbled mess on my phone in the tags section with no message body.

Sure about that? Info I've seen says the G6 is using linix 3.18 kernel not 4.x.

I don't think the 3,x kernel is an issue, and it's likely used because of support from hardware provders.

And no Android device OEM is going to require a full wipe to install an OTA update. Too many users with no way to backup data.

No I'm not sure. Its just conjecture on my part since there is very limited information. In the Android specifications it does state that they can not upgrade to Pie unless they are on the 4.x kernel and 3.x kernel Oreo is not a upgrade candidate since its based on the Nougat kernel. Since the G6 is on the list to upgrade to Pie, I assume they are on the 4.x kernel otherwise it wouldn't be allowed since it doesn't support Project Treble.

True there is no real way to do a true data backup and then restore on a update or upgrade. I do understand there are 3rd party utilities that will which could be licensed by the manufacturer. But that also means the manufacturer has to care. LOL

Nope. Going forward security patches will be for the latest official release.

Only way to keep N updated would be custom ROM that is maintained (good luck) or that you update and build yourself.

So now I think that this update topic is over for me until I found a way around to get security patches.

I think that the June security patch which I get in the month of August is last for me and for those who don't want an unstable version of Oreo.

Going forward I bet even those that upgrade to Oreo will not be getting security patches. At least not on a regular basis and probably only for a limited time. My G4 is on 7.0 Nougat and hasn't received a security update since April. I suspect the G5 with Oreo will also stop receiving updates by next April. Moto is even doing a poor job of keeping their latest products updated with security patches.

The update isn't unstable (or at least for me it isn't). I updated my phone to Oreo 2 weeks back, and so far I've faced zero issues. Battery life has improved considerably, and the new UI/features are welcome additions.
